Yeah, Doug. A picture would be great. However, here are some basic tips:
1) If there are markings on the base of the blade near the handle (the "ferrule" for you technical types), let us know what they are.
2) Handle condition is a good measure of blade age
3) Anything that says "Military Issue" or "India" should be suspect, although the Indians have some pretty old khukuris too.
Of course, experience is the best measure for judging a khukuri - something that not many of us (me included) have a lot of.
If you are really interested, I have as a customer a collector who has over 300 khukuris (some going back several hundred years). He'll know for sure. If you send it to me, I can send it to him for evaluation. However, if it's a cheap knock-off, the cost of getting it to me and back may be more than the khukuri is worth.
So maybe a picture posted here (emailed to Blackdog) would be your best bet. At least we could come up with a consensus. OR, you could auction it off, and let the market decide
