Estwing Axe Mod

They both look awesome! This is one of the things I love about this forum you get so much cool inspiration from such creative and talented people!

I like the waffled poll on the second one, cool modification.

double that. why havent i started doing that on my axes? nothing worse than seeing your damned wedge fly out of the kerf just because you missed a whack.

I've been thinking of deepening the old waffle pattern on my Plumb rafting axe. I think a good triangle file would do the job. Maybe start out with a knife file.

oh cool! those old timers had it all figured out. makes you wonder how many times we have "reinvented the wheel" because of lost knowledge. have fun filing the hardened poll ;)
also, ever used one of these? http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-t...ols/files/metal-checkering-files-prod488.aspx

the largest one @ 20 lines per inch seems awfully close for this application-- but new tools are always fun.

That's interesting. I wasn't aware of checkering files. But even 20 lines/inch seems way too narrow for my needs. These lines are at about 8 lines/inch. Since the lines are already established I think I could deepen them with a knife file and then finish them with a 3-square or triangle file.
