estwing camp axe or council tool

I think wildman's advice is good and experienced with these tools. Not a bad idea.

As a side note, anyone who uses an axe should know how to hang one; AT LEAST be able to "re-wedge" one. If that's too demanding, that person has no business using axes...my unsolicited and jaded opinion. (I'm not referring to anyone in particular BTW.)

I agree, though as I mentioned, I think folks need a reliable "gateway axe" to get their foot in the door while they practice hanging, profiling, sharpening, etc. If the average new person buys an axe that fails quickly after purchase, they'll most likely get discouraged and toss it aside and go back to using knives and saws (I've seen this happen with a couple of people in my area).

That's a great point. Makes sense to me 100%.

How did we go from Estwing or Council Tools to a Fiskars?!?!? What is happening? Better make up for this error in judgment, get you a Council right now!!!

Because no one should ever be punished by using an Estwing 'axe' :D

They have their place....

which is to hang in my shed unused sense 2003.

I do keep mine in my truck just in case I ever need a pry bar or to beat the hell out of something :D
Or to dig a trench in the ice, snow or rocks to help me get unstuck... Which I have done ;)
I even put the rubber handle under the tire to help get some traction. It didn't work too well for that though. It just burnt the rubber off of it :)

Needless to say... I love to abuse the thing :D

Council tools over any of the others I would not buy the Hudson Bay but the boys axe. we buy them for our camping crews. Our crew beat the snot out of them. I have to rehandle at least one a week and reshape the edge on at least one a week but the council boys axe are tough and can take a beating from high school kids over swing and hiting rocks much better then any other axe out there. Buy a good wood handle America made axe. Also to add I have not seen the wedges come apart most of the time with the metal wedges I can reuse them but I could see them falling apart if left in the same handle for years.

The other thing is that Council's standard Hudson Bay axes are notorious for developing loose heads within days, weeks, or months of purchase. I've owned three, and yep, all of them came loose within this time period. To Council's credit, they did rehang the last one in a traditional manner and it held up well, but it was a huge headache to get to that point after dealing with everything.

I've been considering one of these - just curious - when the wedge gets loose, is it possible to replace it with a wooden one?
