this was an estwing large camp axe that i have owned for almost 12 yrs. i always loved this axe but it wasent very carry/bugout friendly, so i decided to lighten her up. most of those years she rode in the back of my truck in rain or shine, and she didnt come out until it was time to work hard, and she was very good at that. i have put her through some tests over the years, broke concrete, chopped cable, wood, used her as a pry bar, and she just smiled and asked for more. heres some pics of her make over, 1lbs 14 oz, 19" long, 5" from edge to back, leather wrap handle epoxied down. im still trying to decide on the piercings to lighten her up a little, what do yall think???
this is how she started out http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/toolsplus_2072_619338022

NO WAY!!!! that is very cool! man..........this could be the start of a new axe/hawk craze -modding Estwings....i got one in my truck box........i know whats happening to it now ;):)

thanks guys, i used a porta band saw for the the big chunks, a dremel tool with cut off wheels for the curves, and beltsander for cleaning it up. i put it back in the truck for a few weeks to rust the new shiney spots then rubbed it with oil and steel wool to smooth it out and give it that antique look.

You just sold me on getting an estwing. They are like $30-35 down at Home Despot.

BTW, tell us how it chops with the lighter weight. I really like it!

which axe have you found for $35? the one i modded is the large camp axe and about the cheapest iv seen them for is $45+, it still chops really well considering i cut about 10" off the handle, it feels alot faster now. the next one i want to mod is the estwing rig builders axe, reshape the blade and maybe use spray bedlinder over the blue handle(i wonder if that will stick good?), and maybe duracoat the steel???? i have my gears turning :)

Instead of using the spray bedliner stuff how about using the dipit plastic for tool handles?

I would like to have a mod job done to mine! Can someone point me to soemone? Thanks.

it was pretty easy to do, you can do the whole project with a dremel, i just used a band saw for the bigger chunks. basically draw a shape you like with a marker and cut along the line, it takes some time, just go slow.... if you have any questions or need help>> longfletch27@yahoo.com

I like what you,ve done,, looks great, I,d like to know what you did to the leather handle? It looks like you wraped it with something.
