estwing campaxe mod= norse style hawk

I did that with mine a while back (though not such a nice job as yours) and the vibration was so bad I can not use the axe anymore!

I like what you,ve done,, looks great, I,d like to know what you did to the leather handle? It looks like you wraped it with something.

i just took a piece of leather, cut it into a circle/disk shape...then started a 1/2" spiral cut all the way to the center, then just spiral wrapped the handle. a 10"-12" leather disk will make a super long leather strap. id wrap a strip of inner tube rubber first then the leather to absord shock, as mentioned in the above post.

i found that if you wrap with inner tube rubber, then leather its way better....also plug the end hole with a piece of wood glued in, it stops the vibration, kinda like gripping a bell it dosent ring.

which axe have you found for $35? the one i modded is the large camp axe and about the cheapest iv seen them for is $45+, it still chops really well considering i cut about 10" off the handle, it feels alot faster now. :)

try weighting the existing handle next time before you shorten the handle - it gives the hawk/hatchet a Ballast Effect that makes it easier to turn in flight, and it hits harder too. the looser you hold the hawk, especially with your hand chocked up a handwidth or so (in general)

it can also make the chopper seem lighter, because of better weight distribution.

try it, you will probably be sold right away.

Thats very cool....Nice work.

Id like to see a review on its performance if your inclined....

Thanks!

Ive just completed three of these all with different cuts. One with a Plasma cutter and two with a water jet. I 'll try and post pics soon.
