etch logo or stamp?

I find maker's marks an interesting topic in general.

Some makers seem to almost use them as design elements and a few are good enough to enhance a knife in my opinion. As the below.
The loveless "naked lady" has also made quite the impression over the years.

However I believe their purpose is to identify who made a knife and should be easily found however (in most cases) definitely not noticed (or screamed out) at first glance.

I've only complained when a mark was so small or hidden that I can't find it. Beyond that, subtle is a MUCH better approach.

More often than I wish, there are marks which act as billboards rather than identification.

Not sure how much Loveless tested it, but in my experience with him he has said little he couldn't back up. Perhaps someone that wanted to get into the specifics about it might give him a call.

The most important thing though is however it is marked that it be a good clear mark that someone can read, and listing the name of Podunk Forge will not help any customers find a maker in the future either.

Loveless using the cities in which he was located not only allowed people to find him--but also created a history and timeline of all his knives. D'Holder's with Amarillo, Phoenix, and Peoria can be dated to a point.

By the same token I had to give up identifying some knives in my latest handmade auction. Looks like a duck head etching, but at a loss. And after searching for some for ten minutes--well it is to no one's benefit to confuse the customer base.

Interesting that I just got a notice that photobucket blocked the Loveless Nude Maker's Mark in my photobucket album because they stated it violated their terms of use.

I never thought of a maker's mark as pornography.

Absolutely wise words that needs to be engraved in stone.
