Etched 4 times and still no hamon....

Okay okay okay... I thought maybe Brian had something going on with his blades that I was in the dark on :)

Ya' bunch of smarties :D

Now that I know the deal, I gott'a say--- Brian, it's a good thing they didn't ask you to spell hamon as part of your new job interview! :p

Zammie! :D

Seems you're sanding the knife enough to look bright again, removing all evidence of the etch.
Don't sand it of. Burnish it into the blade, then clean it up.
Also, dilute the etch a bit more, as an aggresive etch will etch hard and soft areas at the same rate. Try a vinegar etch.
Hammond organs?

I know this is off topic but I printed a buisness card when I was in Oregon.........
The address on the card was Virginia ------ I spelled it Vagina!!! I think I spelled it wrong and spell check changed it or I had something on my mind!!!!!!

Needless to say the owner of the shop was PO'd so we pull out the signed off proof to see who messed up. His name was the signee!!! I loved that day

You may have not gotten the blade up to critical or the knife was just hardened without a hammon.

Does a file bite real easy along the edge? It should almost slip and hardly bite at all. I think a file is around 63 RC so the blade will be a little lower than that.

Can you post a picture?

I'll give all these latest suggestions a try and let you know what happens.

Brian (Goode), I have not tested the edge but am positive a file will slide across it. I can, indeed, see the "temper" line, clear as day and night, when I etch. I tried doing the etch (3-4mins) and then neutralized it with windex, wiped the crud off and then rubbed it down (as Nick/Terry do) with Flitz - still, no joy.

I'll try both a longer etch in FeCl, as well as a ligther etch in vinegar (thanks Brian Galloglas) to see what happens. If that doesn't help, I'll let it go and be happy with a nice satin (1000grit) finish and maybe try my hand at some 1080 or W-2.

I would love to post the pics but don't own a digital camera or a scanner - too busy getting the shop equipped.

Thanks again, all!
Dana
