I have yet to make a folder, but it is only a matter of time before I go over to the dark side because, well to be frank, customers like folders. ;) I was wondering if any of you folder guys could tell me what parts of a damascus liner/frame lock blade you "mask" off when you etch them and how you do it?

It has been a few years since I made a liner lock. When I made damascus blades for them I mask off the pivot area and where the detent ball runs on the blade. I used nail polish to mask it and cleaned it off with acetone after the etch.

I hope this helps.

I mask the pivot hole and an area for the washers, and a line for the detent ball,I also use nail polish as a resist.

I second what the 2 above posted. Detent hole and line, where the washers are going and the inside of the pivot hole in the blade I also put some finger nail polish on the stop pin mark and where the lock bar meets the blade tang. Just to be sure. If your using Damascus bolsters I like to coat the bottom of the bolster and where it's dove tailed at as well. Just inspect everything over really well to make sure no finger nail polish is on the parts you want to etch. Good luck!!

Thanks, guys. i use nail polish on my makers mark when I etch my damascus blades. I have had mixed results which are probably the result of my buying the cheapest polish that why sold at Walgreens. :D
