Hey guys, I think its time to improve my makers mark. Ive been just signing each blade with a dremel tool.

Id really rather not use a stamp.

So what about etching? My question is, I etch all my blades with ferric cloride to bring out the hamon to double check my heat treat, and hamons look good also, so would an etcher, escpecially the ones that use salt be able to etch over the etch that is already on the blade?

Thanks,

Joe

Yes... Etch your mark, then etch for your hammon. You will love an etcher, it looks SOOOO much more professional.

On a somewhat related side note, on my damascus blades,I have started to etch my mark, then paint my mark with fingernail polish, etch my Damascus blade in fc then clean it all off with acetone. This leave my mark bright steel and easier to see through the Damascus patterning. This wouldn't be needed in your application.

I've done it both ways, etching my mark on a ferric-etched hamon blade, and etching the mark before etching the hamon. Both work fine IME. I usually etch the mark first, though. That way you can clean up your mark, pull your sanding lines nice and straight, and get the blade super clean for hamon etching as the last step.
