etching damascus and epoxy

Hello All,

Ive been reading up on different ways to etch pattern welded gaurds/bolsters without harming the other elements of the knife.
I would like to use a pair of matching bolsters on an AEB-L blade I had hardened recently. I am planning on using 2 SS pins to hold the bolsters on. I want to make them hidden pins so as not to disrupt the pattern of bolster.

My question Is can I use my west systems to epoxy the bolsters to blade rather than solder it?
Can I etch the bolsters without harming the epoxy?

After researching a lot of threads I still do not have clear answers on these two questions.

I would contact technical support at Gougeon Bros. about possible harm to the epoxy from the etching solution. If you rough the blade and bolsters with 220 grit, the glue bond should be strong enough. Their phone is (866) 937-8797.

I don't believe the epoxy thing to attatch bolsterrs is a very good way to go even with a knife that is not to be used much. I do believe the eching will effect the epoxy . Frank

Most use a method of assembly that allows for take-down of the bolsters to allow for final etch and finish. Depending on how you are using your "hidden" ss pins will also be a factor. I would not rely on just epoxy to hold your bolsters on. If you really wanted hidden pins you will need to find a way to press the bolsters on and flare the pins under them. This would require some sort of Hydraulic press and might cause a slight distortion in the damascus bolsters. Might want to look into some nice stainless or even gold screws to hold on your bolsters.
