Etching Damascus

Yes, before hardening, I couldn't get even half the contrast as I have now. After hardening and tempering, this was the best I could get. Any ideas what went wrong?

It could be a lot of things, I'm not an expert on making Damascus but I can finish Damascus pretty good. The etch will tell you if you heat treated properly. It couldbe your best treat or the materials. FC/WV mix will give the darkest contrast. If yiu want more contrast add a different steel, if you have a blackening issue its ur heat treat and or mix.

This are some I do in my mix:

Well, I have done literally hundreds of bolsters for liner locks. You just need to etch longer to get good results.I strongly suggest you stay away from muriatic acid unless working with Damasteel Damascus.
