Etching Designs into Steel

When mixing the asphaltum what is the texture of it? Is it gritty or creamy or like a peanut butter? When it dries is it like a firm wax or????

I tried using liquid asphaltum straight from the can as well as mixing it with Wax like the book suggests. Straight from the can worked better for me. It goes on like a creamy tar and dries hard like an enamel paint. thanks for starting this thread...it has uncovered some other helpful input....and thanks for all who have posted
