Looking for an inexpensive way to make a professional looking marking on my

knives.

Anyone out there ever use the "etch-o-matic" (corny name) with good

success?

Hi Weber, I've used the etch-o-matic and it's not a bad unit. For the same money or less, you could probably get Bob Warner's plans and build one that's a bit better. I bought my stencils from IMG Electromark and I'm very happy with their service, quality and price. Hope that helps.

If you keep an eye out on eBay you will find plenty of very nice etching machines going for very reasonable prices. (Not the etch-o-matics the company is selling there. I think they are a bit over priced.)

Guys, If all you need is a 12v power supply, can you use a automotive battery charger?

Couldn't you etch by just using a DC converter (i.e. charger) and an acidic medium like vinager or something. Seems to me I saw a tutorial that used a DC converter with aligator clips attached to the wires, and Q-tips dipped in a vinager salt water mix.
Why would you pay so much money for a machine when you can practically make your own for free?
You'd have to buy a stencil of course or have some vinal stencils made at a sign shop, but not sure how small of letters you can get from a sign shop.
