I ordered etching solution from us knifemaker and I ordered the 94 which is for carbon and hss steel..I think iI should have ordered the 100 which they say is for all steel including stainless. Is there that much of a difference in the solution..I'm using it on 1095. If their are any recipes floating around I would be interested in trying to make it myself..

Thanks Dan

Just to make sure, you are using this in your AC/DC blade marking etcher- right?

Zaph may be a good person to ask, as IIRC he tested a bunch of etchants. I believe they will all work in the DC etch phase. The difference is in the darkness/color of the oxide deposit in the AC mark phase.

Thanks, Stacy, I haven't tested very many electrolyte solutions but I have tested salt, 94, and 110a. Electrolyte 94 is cheaper than the 110a, but doesn't work as well on stainless. The 110a works fine on either, but is twice as expensive. I know, $5 vs. $10 isn't a big difference. 16 oz. should be a lifetime supply for most people. Although, you will go through it quicker with the larger pad of the personalizer than with q-tips. I include 10ml bottles of 110a with the etchers that I sell.

Here's a demo we did using 110a.

PS: It's propane torches that I've tested a lot of, now over 25 different ones. MT245C is still the best I have found.

Yep. Try it on some stainless scrap, you might find that it will suit your needs. It won't explode or catch fire, so give it a shot.

Thanks for the info. I've been wondering the same thing myself. I also use the personalizer plus and am nearly out of the electrolyte that came with it. I've wondered if SC-E1 (bluish green fluid) or the SCE-10 (pink fluid) is better on High Carbon and Stainless? I've only done a few test on scrap HC and really can't tell any difference, but I haven't done too many etches either!

I use the #94 and it has worked well for me on everything. (steel wise - for Ti I use the #44)

I mostly use carbon and tool steels but I used it with great luck on 154cm. It also works on D2 but not as well as I bet an etchant geared for stainless would. (still stamp deep though) I assume the chromium content makes the difference.

I will say it is a great deal and goes a long ways, I etched about 60 knives in the last month and barely touched the bottle... I use a lot with each etch too.
