Just wondering what most folk do to hold their stencil to the blade and to insure protection of the rest of the blade. Also... at what stage of finishing do most do the etching? Do you normally need to sand over it to clean it up???

Scotch tape
Nail Polish
Last
Maybe 1 or 2 light passes with 600 grit or finer to even out the haze

I use scotch tape around the stencil to hold it which also protects the steel around the stencil. I do it very last (often after sharpening even, but sometimes before), and If it's a hand sanded working finish, I'll gently sand with a hard flat backing edge just a few passes to clean up any fuzziness.

After taping the stencil in place add a couple of drops of alcohol to the surface of the stencil it makes the stencil "lay down" on the surface of the blade and will result in a more distinct mark. Cohesion I believe is the term:)

Thanks... I did just do a practice... and it was indeed a bit fuzzy. My cohesion might have been subpar.

The alcohol idea sounds good.

Is that what the nail polish is for as well??

Nail polish is a resist. The etch wont eat through it. It also works in the same fashion when you etch a blade in acid. It "resist" the effects of the acid.

I use floral flaming pink myself not on my nails of course.:D
