I built a etcher and my ? is what i can use to etch D2 like salt water or vinegar any help will be appreciated thanks.

I'm not positive with D2, but it should work with salt water. I don't measure anymore, just put in enought so that it's more than saturated.

For my first etches I wraped the blade in electrical tape and cut out my initial. So if you wanted to test a small section, maybe on the handle, just put two strips of electrical tape a little ways apart to see if it works. That way you'll have an edge that you can accuratley see how deep and crisp the etch is without wearing out a stencil.

not to hijack a thread, but couldnt you "etch" your name on a carbon blade using a patina?

I tested my etcher with salt water for all steel types I have, it etches just fine. Here is a D2 knife etched with salt-water...

I use only warm salt water (about 1 tablespoon per cup). I've had no trouble with 440C, 154CM, CPM154, 1086, 1095, and O1.

nc, you can use a patina to make your mark if it is uniform enough. Just use a resist of some kind to "paint" your name/logo and then etch. You'll have to etch pretty deeply depending on the look you're going for, and the logo will be raised and shiny.
