In light of the snow challenge, this one is something that EVERYONE can do, if you want. :D

Hammocks are best way to sleep, in my opnion. And you have such a marvelous variety of commercially made hammocks available, ENO(my fav), Hennessey, One Eyed Jack, just to name a few. They are lightweight, nearly universal in their implementation, you can hang them just about anywhere. And they are comfy. I love swingin' myself to sleep, I like to position my hammock so the early morning sun rises, I get one helluva view. :D

But, if you're caught in a tough spot, say your pack gets washed down the Missouri River, or wild animals make off with it in the middle of the night, because you didn't tie it up, you can sleep on the ground, you can you a debris hut, or a lean to, but here in the BKT forum, we like making it a tough spot, in style.

I give you Ethan's Feburary Challenge- Make Your Own Hammock!! Discussion thread here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/924534-Feburary-Contest-Discussion-Thread

Here we go.

You must make a fully functioning hammock. You can use whatever material you want. I would prefer you use natural materials, but paracord is not natural, and that's what I make mine out of when I make them. But, there are many, many other options available. Some suggestions would be bamboo, river cane, natural cordage, cotton fibers, for natural. Sythetic would be something like paracord, nylon twine/rope, silk, silnylon, denim, woven cotten.

So here is what you gotta do, make a hammock, and swing in it. Oh, and just to add a little something to the mix, its gotta hold two people. Hmmmm? Now, we're talking.

But because it has to hold two people, you can use two people. Your wife, girlfriend, best friend, neighbor, mechanic, the bag boy from the local grocery store, I don't care, as long as they aren't a professional hammock maker, they qualify.

Feel free to use a BKT knife to assist you, but you don't have to use anything, and you can't use everything. Your hands and a knife, or your hands only. Thems the breaks.

You must be 18 to enter. You are responsible for yourself, no one else is. If you can't buy it, don't break it.

I'm going to offer some safety guidelines, as a precaution. You are responsible for your actions, so, if you hurt yourself or someone else, you are responsible, not me, not Ethan, not Kabar, not Bladeforums, no one but you.

-When testing your hammock, sling it low to the ground. If it doesn't hold, then you don't have far to fall.
-Never have anything wrapped around your neck, hands, feet, when you are testing your hammock, the material will tension as you put weight on it, and once your feet leave the ground, you might not be able to get out. This is important.
-To test your hammock, you don't need to put all your weight on it at once, enter in it from a sitting position, get all your weight on it, before you swing into it.
-When attempting adding a second person, you will both need to get all your weight on the hammock first, before swinging in. One person falling to the ground is bad, but it gets worse when you double the people

Bottom line, take precautions, be smart, use the head, before the hands, so to speak.

Contest will run until March 1, 2012 11:59pm PST.

This is a Beckerhead Only contest. You must have a number before the contest close.

Prizes

1st Place- Mystery Prize
2nd Place- BK2

In addition to those prizes, I will be giving away something to the person I want, that enters. Might be a winner, might just be someone who's entry I liked, who knows. And I'm not telling what it is, so don't ask.

No chatting is this thread, to enter, post "I, Beckerhead XXX, Accept the Challeng" If you don't have a number when you enter, just leave the XXX blank until you do. You acceptance of the Challenge is your entry, edit it with you post.

You must have 10 pictures per entry, no more, no less. 10. Or you can post an 8min video. No more, no less. One or the other, those are your options.

I, Beckerhead 146, Accept the Challeng

I decided to make my hammock using only things found in my Jeep or my bag. For the hammock I used a cheap utility tarp folded in half longways. Partly to make it smaller but mostly for extra strength, Im not a small fellow. I had planned on tying knots in the end to anchor the lines but the tarp wouldn't tie. Instead I twisted the ends up tied them with 550 cord and went just under that with my cargo straps.

To anchor it to the tree I used a cargo strap without the ratchet part, just went around the tree a couple times and then tied a loop around my 550 cord knot on the end of the tarp.
I had to trim a little sprout off the tree to readjust the height, that was done with the Bk11.

The other end I hooked to the rollbar of my Jeep still using a cargo strap with out the ratchet end.

Then I went down the side and tied the eyelets together just to help it stay in place

Next I tied up my poncho for shelter. I used the BK11 and the branch I trimmed to make tent pegs. 550 for the guy lines.

Here is the pic of me and my son in the hammock under the poncho. Sorry for the bad pic but all I had was a DSL camera and no one else to snap a photo for me. You can see my son my leg and feet and the tarp with the poncho.

I was very happy with how it all turned out. The hammock was very sturdy, and nice and wide. Today was crazy windy and between the poncho and the sides of the hammock coming up we were very comfy and sheltered. So if I got stranded somewhere in my Jeep I am now confident that I would be able to make a decent shelter.
Thanks for the contest it was fun.

Becker Head #153

Today I spent 5 hours stripping, prepping, and twisting basswood bark cordage for this project. I have made natural cordage before, but never anything of this magnatude.
Starting....
010-5.jpg

I managed about 22 feet before my hands wouldnt work any more. I am giving up on the basswood cordage idea. It would have been cool as all get out, but it isnt feasable without hundreds of feet of cord...... At least I gave it a shot, I guess.

Trimming a splice with my BK-11

I am going to soak my hands in hot water now. I am going to try a different approach.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, after the natural cordage idea was given up, I made a hammock out of a ripstop nylon tarp. All it took was to form a loop with the end of the fabric, then run my paracord through the loop. and pull it all tight with a few knots behind the loop. (I used a hook on each end as well). Here is how it went.

Then you form the fabric loop and tie it off. Easy peasy!

I had my nephews around, so we all piled in! (Jake is 5 and Aiden is 4)

homemadehammocks004.jpg

Not satisfied with how easy this hammock was(and the fact that I have made one like this before), I made one from rope as well. It is on solid piece of 5/8 sisal rope, and 55 feet of paracord.

Here is how I made it.

Sisal rope.

Weaving 550 cord side to side with jam knots.

Nothing but rope/cord.

The rope hammock was much harder to make, and way less comfortable than the nylon one. But they were both functional, and my nephews had a ton of fun. Thanks for the challenge, and good luck to all who enter.
