This month, the challenge is very simple, easy to do.......maybe.

:D

Tools- 1 Becker knife of your choosing
Material - 5' long 2x4 or 2x6
- 12' of paracord

The Challenge? Make something. What ever you want, using just the knife, wood, and paracord.

Pretty open ended challenge here, with the only limits being your imagination, and skill with a knife.

You must show a starting picture, with your knife, the wood, and paracord. You must show a pic of the work in progress, and one final pic of the completed project. You can post as much as 20 photo's of your project, but no more.

Or, you can post a video up to 8 minutes long.

You must be 18 to enter, you are responsible for yourself and your actions, no one else is. If you can't buy it, don't break it.

No chatting in this thread, to enter, post "I got wood" in this thread.

Prizes:
1st place- BK9
2nd place- BK5
3rd place- BK2

What can you create?

I spent a couple weeks thinking about what to make. I wanted to come up with something that could be made from a 2x4 and be useful. Then, I figured it out. I'm planning to build some fences pretty soon, so I decided to make a template to set the wire spacings in a barbed wire fence.

First, the materials.

Five foot 2x4, some paracord, and my BK-10.

I used an existing fence to mark the spacing of the wires.

I had a little excess length to cut off the top.

I used the piece I cut off to make a baton.

By batoning, I cut notches at the points where a strand of barbed wire should be.

The clip point was useful for getting into the notch and prying out the last chips of wood.

As you can tell from the baton, I did not take it easy on the BK-10, and it took the beating just fine.

I also cut some notches at the top and added a paracord lanyard to hang it on and for visibility when in the field.

Finished and testing it out. Place the wire in its notch, attach wire to post, move template to next post, and repeat. Should work just fine when I get around to building fence later this spring.

As always, thanks for the contest, Ethan and Moose. I've been giving the BK-10 a lot of carry time lately, and I've been quite pleased with it.

OK. Finally got a little free time to work on something. As requested here is my starting pic with a roughly 5' section of 550(c) cord, a 5' long 2x4, and a BK-12.

Then came a lot of chopping to get both pieces right. I had to check my letter spacing to get the right size for what I wanted. I'm really impressed by how well the 12 chops for a knife its size. It bites pretty deep on each hit.

Now that I got them cut to the right size, it was time to burn. The little guy and I made a hobo stove as a weekend project and that is what I used to burn the wood. Probably would have been faster just to make a fire but I wanted to show him how it worked. I only had two small sticks in my backyard so most of the rest of the
2x4 was used to fuel the stove. (when it wasn't being used to baton the sticks)

I pretty much kept up the pattern of burn some, scrape some, burn some, scrape some........ until I got a nice deep groove going for the letters. I did make a small scraping tool out of a piece of the 2x4. It was a bit overkill to use the knife to get the initial layer of char off.

Once I had a good deep char on both boards it was time to start the final scraping and tying. I don't know how many breaks I had to take because my fingers were hitting muscle failure trying to hold the 12 like this for extended periods.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It looks like one of those old western signs. My wife really liked it and now it has a permanent home on the fence in the backyard. She said it looks rustic. I really wanted to do more with this but it's finals next week and studying comes before playing. I am going to eventually make one of these (not part of the contest) with the 2x4 shaped like a 9 on top and a 2 on bottom. Hope you all enjoyed the pics.

I got wood.

For this challenge I made something, it didn't work the way I wanted it to but I had fun doing it and learned a thing or two. Here goes nothing!

This is supposed to be a pump drill for fire making. Due to my lack of knowledge on pump drills and limited resources this is the best I could come up with in the short window of time that I had.

List of materials: One 5 foot 2x4, 12 feet of 550 cord, and one BK-3 Tac Tool.

First whack into the 2x4.

Since I couldn't use a baton I had to put some weight into it and or whack it on the ground to get the BK-3 to go through.

The BK-3 wasn't phased at all by this knot.

Once piece down, now I have a baton.

I took off another section by batoning and then chopped the rest in half.

Back to the baton.

Shaving the spindle.

Roughing out the harthe board.

Making the handle.

Everything together with the counterweight attached. I couldn't get it to spin correctly. Obviously there was a balance/momentum issue.

Everything afterwards. The bottom left is the remainder on the 550 cord and 2x4 (besides the shavings) that was left.

I am not afraid to admit that I failed with this one but I will not except defeat. Despite it not working the way I had hoped and not even close to creating fire I do not want to give up on making a pump drill that works.

Thanks Moose for getting my mind working.

I GOT WOOD!

I decided a little late to get in on this so it was partly an epic failure. After getting the green light to go play in the wood shop last night the only thing I could come up with was to make a pair of sandals. I started out using a scrap piece of treated 2x4 that I found outside, my BK16 and 12 feet of OD paracord:

I marked out a spot about a foot long and then started doing some push cuts to get it started. After I got some of the material removed, i started doing some snap cuts and worked that until I got it thin enough to break in half.

After that I scored the outside of the shorter piece of 2x4 and began batoning it with the longer piece.

I started working that down until I could put in some shims. I kept working it until I got to a large knot and couldn't make any headway. At that point I had to cheat and get a wood chisel out in order to finish splitting it.

I then used the tip of the blade to round out some holes in the wood so that I could lace the paracord through. I used a little over a foot and a half per side.
They're certainly not pretty but they will work in a pinch.

With the remainder of the paracord I wanted to work on making a set of ranger beads using the paracord and then a piece of cord tied and melted in place of actual beads. I didn't get to finish it but this was the work in progress when I stopped last night:

Although this was a failure and I had to cheat a little bit to get it done I still had fun doing it. Good luck to the others that entered!

Wow, such great prizes and so few entries - I think I'm going to have to apply to be a Beckerhead.

It's good to see the 3 getting some love. :D
