Here is the spot for questions, comments, first attempts, and stuff. Have fun, be safe, and make'em pretty.

This will be a fun one to watch. Being an archaeologist, I've seen huge projectile points and atlatl weights. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with. Good luck and have fun!

Damn!!! My Wife would flip out if I went gold. I've been thinking about the lower one (basic I think), but I'm afraid of what she'd do to me. I might try this still and post it in here.

For the record, it's pronounced 'ottle lottle'....
You need a long flexible dart - most are 4-5' long and made of 2 materials jointed together.

I'm not sure if I'll find the time for this contest, but I'd like to. Here's a couple pics of me last summer, trying my skills at the atlatl.

this is going to be interesting - take some thought and stuff.
I wonder how sunflower stalks would work? (common, not giant)

John, I remember your posting on that, good post too.

If you don't mind being our "question" guy, got any tips to help out get started. I figured Goggle will have the most answers, but I think any points from someone who built one before, might prove quite valuable.

Thought I would post these pictures as inspiration. First picture is kgd hunting with my atlatl.

Who said primitive weapons are ineffective????

Thanks Moose, but I'm afraid I'm no expert. :(

I've only thrown the atlatl darts, never built or even owned one. The pics here are from a stone tools event at Letchworth State Park. I can tell you that it's a lot of fun, and you get lots of power and accuracy using an atlatl to launch a projectile into a bale of hay. :)

Well, you threw one and that's at least somthing.:D

Naw, just jokin'. Still, any input you got is good for me, how did they throw? Could you have taylored it to fit you better? Would it have gone straighter, farther?

Moose

ETA, Nice pics DOC, good lookin' spear set you have there. Anything you got DOC, ta share? Other than the pics, these things are incredible, for distance, but I have found accuracy to be an issue, with me, YMMV

Some questions:

Is the contest open to ANY gold member, or just gold Beckerheads?

Must we construct both the atlatl AND the dart, or just the atlatl itself?

Can we use other, non Becker knives to finish the atlatl such as sandpaper and whatnot, or must all finishing and construction be done with a Becker knife? No finishing tools or material?

Gold Beckerheads, unless specified OPEN, all contests will be Beckerhead only

It must function, handle and spear make the set, make both, please.

No, BKT knives only, all natural methods and natural materials, stones for sandpaper, berries for dye, that sort of thing. All natural, baby, all natural.

Knives only for all of it. I will allow nylon paracord inner strand's for cordage, but natural cordage will win you more points with the EJudge.

there's nothing primitive about this and other ancient technology ;)

as you'll find out :D

Just posting to note that I'm a dumbass.
In the February Challenge, I failed miserably in (a) actually finding time to engage the challenge, and (b) following directions and editing my original "I accept the challenge" post.
My apologies. Last week is a blur. Father-in-law had a stroke. Son came down with strep. I'm head-deep into some job applications. In the fracas, I totally blanked on some simple directions.
I'm posting this so that others can see what NOT to do on the March challenge. Don't wait till the last minute, and when in doubt, read the directions.

Now... back to your regularly scheduled atlatl programming...

All right It may be time to go gold, sorry guys I have not posted much in the last few days. Work is ramping up again and I'm beat by the time I get home. This should be a very interesting contest. Any thoughts of bringing them to the First Beckerhead Gathering for some "in use" fun and prizes???...:D

Thanks for the additional info. I was wondering about the dart too. (if we were making one of those too)

This should be pretty cool. Shot a bow and crossbow most of my life. (pic of my old Whitetail II and Barrnett hand held crossbow attached)

Never one of these though. Should be intertesting.

As easy as it is to get busted drawing a bow, I can't imagine trying to hunt with one of those but I'll be very interested to see what folks come up with. Cool contest!

Even though myself and Mingo can not enter the contest since we don't have enough disposable income to buy gold memberships. We are going to participate anyways and post them up here.
