Do the work, if you can, go gold before the contest close, and you're in. Really, its not that much, but I feel you on the strapped for cash deal, it happens to all of us.

I plan on working some Gold Memberships into some contests, I have done a couple, but on the Ethan's Challenges, we play for knives.:D

I will be checking for volunteers on a few of the "tests" I got planned, so, who knows, maybe if you're in the area sometime, we can do something for ya.

I love making/playing with atlatls! Here is my favorite, it's a southwestern style with a dugout and "nub" catch. Its made of Silver maple.

Here is one I made in November for my hunting buddy. The darts are his and I don't care for them but it was all I had that day. It was the first of three I made that week.

Moose, got some questions about the challenge.
For the darts, can we use other tools like string and glue to attach the heads and feathers? I have no problem making pitch glue and using sinew for my darts but I also know that a lot of guys don't have access to those materials.



P.S. I'll be gold by the end of contest, just gotta get paid first.

Good question. I understand that some stuff is gonna have to be synthetic, but, I don't want everyone to go over board with sanders, saws and polyuerathane.

Use what you have to, but don't use it in excess. Sythetic glues are OK, and sythetic feathers are OK, but honestly, the more natural, the better the chances of scoring more points.

Doing some research. Checking the "Primative" sites.

Amazing the diffferent types of these there are. And how long they were actually used. Couple thousand years by some accounts.

Geometry: Length. Weight. Height. Distance. ARRRRRGGGGGG ! Way to many variables for my beer soaked brain to fathom.

Gonna' have to go olde school on this one.

I would say its whatever he wants to judge it on. Best thing to do, enter, do your best, and see what happens when the judging is done.

I'm a knife-maker level BF member (not advertised in my header because I'm a beginner) - does that qualify me for the challenge? Tho honestly I'll probably be too busy making knives to make things WITH knives. :-)

When is spear season? I've figured the BK2 qualifies as a REALLY short spear. If I just hang out on a limb above a deer run and drop down...

That video is nuts.
I've spent weeks in the woods hunting and never seen a single damn deer except the first time that got me hooked. And here's a kid with a spearthrower caught on CAMERA?

John G, Thank you for posting that video! That shows the two best parts of hunting (FOOD & Spending time with Family). Good Video, The Rocky theme song made it even better! :thumbup:
 
This thread reminds me of Anthropology 100 at the University of Idaho with Frank Leonhardy (now deceased, but was an excellent prof.). He took us on a field trip one day, and he had us all bring sack lunches. At lunch time he had us all put our lunches in a row in a nearby field, step back just 20 paces, then he brought his atlatl out and wouldn't let us eat until we had "killed" our lunches.... It was a long lunch lol. Sorry for the off topic, just thought some of you would get a kick out of the anecdote.

Yes it does. You will need to change your group memebership to reflect your status, in the User CP, group memberships, and you are good to go.

I am only half done but I already have 12 pics.
Guess I'll have to delete some.....
