Ethan's December Challenge

Hey Everybody......

I REALLY< REALLY hate to say this but I fear we have TWO winners....Rob certainly gets major points for using green wood(I would NEVER have done that unless I was freaking freezing).....I am really glad to see that it can be done though....Guyon gets a first as well for giving it a real go after a complete failure.....I have never heard of, or tried to use hemlock......I love seasoned paw paw for a board and spindle, well seasoned white parts of red cedar (I love that stuff) have always worked for me.....

Good work guys..........

Sorry it took so damned long for me to get with it....Had a real medical scare a couple of days ago which turned out to be a minor problem BUT, I was pretty self centered there for a bit.......

I am really proud for you guys....... I know getting a coal for the first time was a REALLY big deal for me.......

By the way i suspect that aboriginal Americans always had a nice dry, tested kit with them just as I always keep that Bic in my left pants pocket.......

My first time out was in a class with much constructive criticism and support, so I am especially proud for you both doing this completely on your own.......

Give me a PM with addresses and phone numbers please and I will try to get the przes out before I leave for SHOT Show.......

Really good show mates....

All Best.....

Sweeeeeeet !!! Thanks for the contest guys, it was fun making my bow and even more fun making fire from nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone here is a winner, as we all learn from another... I've learned two important steps with the drill, that will stick with me forever.
Had I not entered this contest I may have left the bow in the dust (pun), as I would ware myself out before and get nothing.. I figured why try again I gots FireSteel :D

Ethan no worries, health is first and foremost, stay healthy and prayers sent your way for a Happy, Healthy New Year !!!

Take care,

Rob

Well slap my mama and call me surprised.
I didn't expect this result at all, especially with my solo shoestring presentation (iPhone).

I posted up the first miserable experience mainly for old Moose.
It was getting to be crunch time, and I didn't think anybody was going to enter his contest. :p
Second time out was mostly about being stubborn and lucky to find some cedar.

Ethan, I'm glad to hear your scare was just that--a scare and not more.
Been there and have the cardiac catheter record to show for it.
I see no reason for you to apologize for any perceived delay. Health comes first.

On another note, I've been playing with my little kit some more. Getting better and quicker though I don't get a coal every single time. My technique is improving though. I've found that an SAK saw makes quicker work of that notch, and I see mistwalker's point about serrated knives now. I may have to put those two serrated Beckers I own into the rotation. This was a great challenge for me because it forced me into the learning curve, and I'm still learning. I also got to play with some Becker knives that I'd ignored for a long while, and I have newfound appreciations for both the Magnum Camp (outside the kitchen) and the Crewman.

Finally, regarding hemlock, I just saw this post recently over in the ESEE forum. :D

Ok decklin I did a lot of research before I attempted my bow drill and it paid off. You won't have to my friend because I did it for us already LOL. Oak is to much of a hard wood to work with so is maple. Also stay away from conifers like hemlock and pine.

Oversight correction...
Omitted in my last post was a thank you to both Ethan and Moose for the contest.
I was so surprised I forgot my manners. Thanks fellas!

Congrats guys! Well done! Wish I would give it a go now. Oh well, there is always the January challenge!

Hey Widerstand.....

I REALLY have to apologize......I skipped right over your video.....I was looking for large blocks of pics....I am old and can be stupid.......Please4
pm your phone number and address.....We WILL work something good out.....

I have to say that you did a great job.....The colder it is and the more humid it is the HARDER it gets........If I remember correctly for every 10 degree drop(F) in temp you need twice as much sweat to get a coal.....Since my first coal I have never been able to look at a match or lighter without a sense of wonder......

Any how please accept my apologies.....GREAT job.....

All Best.....

Thanks Eathan!

I am going to have to remember that line "If I remember correctly for every 10 degree drop(F) in temp you need twice as much sweat to get a coal".

Flexxx, I don't know how the whole 1st, 2nd, 3rd thing will shake out. You may still see some love. Let's see what the Moose man says.
However, if not, I've got some love to send your way, especially since you like the BK-7 so much. I enjoyed seeing your entry in this contest.
