Hi all

Less than a month til the event of the Spring. I would like to offer this thread as a place to discuss questions about what to bring and what activities we might pursue once we arrive. Hopefully everyone will chip in here and participate. I will start it off below.

One activity I would like to see is a class or two on starting fires. Specifically helpful to me would be starting a fire with a fire steel and tinder picked up off the ground. I can do pretty well with jute cord and magnesium shavings but so far I have failed when trying just naturally found tinder. Help here please! :-)

Here's a short list of things that you'll need for sure. This is not necessarily a complete list.

1. Knives
2. Guns and ammo
3. Bacon
4. more bacon
5. Some good booze
6. bacon
7. A comfortable sleeping setup or enough booze to not care.
8. vegetables to make a healthy salad. Just kidding, moar bacon!!!

Think of some things you wanna learn, fire, Traps/snares, shelters, whatever something woodsy. I bet someone is gonna be there who can teach you that skill. I wanted to learn cordage making at the first gathering and mingo knew how to do it. If you want to have a discussion on the topic of "What should we do" or "What should I bring" it gets out of hand pretty quick, you just gotta be there to nip it and refocus the discussion on the info needed or it'll turn into a drunken barage of drunkeness. Which, is also fine.

Besides fire making, shelters would also be a great addition.

You gotta do your homework because there is gonna be so much skill there it'd be a shame to not get to pick people's brains to the max.
Also I was thinking you could probably organize your own contest at the event, I doubt ethan would mind.

I agree! We have a lot of folks from different walks of life and shockingly most have useful skills. We just gotta harness that amidst the debauchery.

Surprisingly, this is harder than you might think. I took a lot of different materials with me once planning on a contest with prizes. But, there were already a lot of contests and activities set up, and we all want time to just talk to each other too :)

We will have a few custom knives from the custom makers here on BFC that we will be testing out.

The knives will he bushcraft style knives, so, bow drill kits, striking fire steels and shelter building, will be on the menu of tasks we will he tackling with these custom, handmade blades.

And bacon. My gout is well under control, so bring on da swine......

Did you get the time off?

I could agree on some of the fire starting with the Bow Drill in mind. That is one that I have never been able to get going in the field without some man made help. a few shavings of magnesium really spark things well but that is not the point.

I told Moose, but I'll throw it up here as well. Besides my usual knives, stones and hearing pro, I'll try to bring an array of gloves for folks.

cottonwood bark is your friend. The dry inside is flaky goodness - you can crumble it, tease it apart, make a bird's nest, and it'll take a spark. (if it's less dried out, you can use it to make cordage)
