question - say ya find a part, a gun part, for sale on a forum (not this one, lol) and it is something you are interested in, and make an offer on the thing (say $20, he was asking $30). then you wanna make sure the part fits, tell the guy ya wanna check it out for proper fit(it was never shipped though), and call a bud who's a gunsmith to ask, and find out ya can get the exact same thing in shotgun news for 1/2 the amount (say $10) are ya a total jerk for backing out?? or should you save the money when the diff is so great?? what would you do??? oh, and it will fit, so cant say it wont work on your rifle (though it did enter my mind, lol)- and what would ya say, seems almost insulting to offer anything so much less than the amount first mentioned, i mean 30% off, plus 50% off, before long he'll pay me to take it, lol

taught me a lesson - do research before making offer, some things are much less expensive than ya would think...............seriously, lol

thanks

greg

I would kick myself and then send the $20...and its not a question of etiquette, you went to him with what was close to a lowball offer (remember you hadn't done any research yet, so you didn't know) to which he agreed to, even giving you extra time to take the part and your gun to a gunsmith. Bottom line, you owed him $20.

Sorry that I keep coming back to this, but this is really bugging me. Whats really disturbing is that a long time established member of this forum would even have to ask about this.

say ya... make an offer on the thing...

That's all the information I needed to render my opinion on the matter.

You made an offer. It's done. Your offer was not contingent upon researching fair market value, but on the part fitting, which it did. In other words...

You made an offer. It's done.

The very fact that your conscience is talking to you, and making you ask this question is answering your own question. If it feels wrong, there is probably a good reason for it. You made an offer; stand behind it.

Greg,
I usually apply the "Bell, book, and candle" litmus test to these type of actions/decisions.

"Bell"
Does your decision/action raise any warning bells in you conscience? If it does, you should re-think your decison because
something in your character is telling you are doing wrong.

"Book"
Does your decision/action violate any written/unwritten rule or accepted practice/principle? If it does, re-think your decision.

"Candle"
Does/will your decision/acion stand up to the light of day. Would you
be proud or ashamed of your action/decision if your family or friends read about it in a newpaper? If the answer is no, then re-think your decison.

Just my 2 cents worth.

SIFU1A,

As you said, you have to do the research first. Once uou make the offer you're stuck with it.

Reminds me of my first knife purchase after 10 years out of the main stream. Paid $ 250 for a $ 145 Gerber Airframe becuase I wasn't smart enough to spend some time researching. Expensive lesson never to be forgotten.

Yup - you have the right idea. Internet or Face to Face, you gotta do what you say you're gonna do. Honor and reputation are everything, even if it costs you money to keep 'em. ;)
