Eton radio's

I have the grundig/eton 300- it's small. and it will run forever on the AA batteries. I like the form factor. I find the frequency drift less than pleasing, and the dial sensitivity is iffy. the RX unit is REALLY GOOD, though. If they'd just put a PLL in and make it digital in the same form factor it would be 150%. It really does sound good, just touchy to tune and likes to drift off freq.

If anyone wants a non dynamo, long lasting, ultraportable one- the KA1103 from kaito has an...odd user interface, but a really sensitive RX, does SSB tuning and does "everything" - large SWL coverage, AM/FM (not just US bandplans, either), a rela antenna jack, programmable charger for NIMHs, etc. paperback book sized.

Just a heads up. I contacted Eton at Customer_Support@etoncorp.com and asked about an adaptor for the iPhone. I got this reply:

For those of you with an Eton radio without the proper cell phone charge adaptors, it might be worth giving them a shout.

Nice work Guyon. I have the older eton red cross 150. I have taken it on a few trips so far and it is a great little radio. A couple of things to note with them though:

As stated earlier, the dial tuning isn't the greatest. It really almost needs to be sitting still and even then the signal drifts from time to time.

I've had mine accidentely turn on in my pack since the volume/on switch is really easy to turn on. I solved this with a small piece of hockey tape that covers the volume control until I want it on.

Run time is really great if you use it on really low volume. The last trip I went on, I left the radio on overnight and fell asleep to it on the lowest volume I could get it to be. At night in the deep woods, the lowest volume is actually fairly loud. Anyway, it ran all through both nights and still had some juice left in it. I'm anxious to see how many nights it will run on a full charge.

Good hunting.

Thanks Guyon! Soon I'll be able to take the iPod Touch into the woods, watch movies, and then charge it back up with my FR300! Woohoo!

Nah, I won't do that. But I'll probably get adapters for our new phones when they are available. Thanks again!
