Eucalyptus Is Really Something!

I don't have the color you do Mist, but I really like the way this wood looks. And this thing tapers to absolutely nothing...pretty wild.

Still looks great man. Bonafide posted these a while back and made me start seriously considering a tapered Runt... :)

All right folks we’re selling her as a second. Buying it comes with the Fiddleback Promise – that you won’t ever sell the knife. New price would be $290, seconds price is $225. The knick in the handle happened when Andy put the final pass on the blade at the grinder, the belt just touched the handle material. We’ll fill it as best we can before shipping.

Kephart (Second) with Eucalyptus burl over natural with blue pinstripes, SFT Tang, convex on 1/8” spalted 01 steel - $225

Damn, talk about bad timing on my part lol. Considering what I am about to do with the one I have, I wish I had just waited on you to mess his one up :)

That sure is a cracker of a burl on that knife mist . We're surrounded by those Eucalyptus trees over here and the burl color varies depending on the species some are a deep red but all are beautiful.
Nice score mate :)

I've seen the red figure before, but was really taken by the green in this one. Green is my favorite color :)

That really may be the most amazing Kephart to come out of the shop! It even looked good in the FF pics (haha!), but now we can really see how amazing it is. That burl looks like you could lose yourself just staring into it.

Michael

Yeah, I have slowly but surely learned how to tell by the Friday pics, just how awesome a knife will look in person :). I sat outside yesterday for a while turning it in the sunlight, and did sort of get lost in it lol

Great catch Mist. I was back and forth with this knife last Friday, the FB photos did not do this knife justice. The search continues.....

True enough! Ah well, such is life.

You got it Bear! Thank you. As I mentioned we'll clean it up as best we can before sending it your way. Have fun with it!

Yeah, the photos on Friday don't always do the wooden handles justice. I copied the description as soon as I saw it, but had no hope of actually getting it. I was stunned when Ken said I did lol. It is sitting here on my desk catching some rays of the afternoon sun and is just stunning :)

Yeah, I'll make this one work for a living, it should enjoy that :)

Ya know, this wood isn't just beautiful, it's pretty dense too even with the tapered tang it is just barely handle-heavier than a neutral balance, which works out perfect for me for a bushcraft knife.

Quick Q -- is the Eucalyptus burl stabilized? Everything I have read has led me to believe that it is naturally stable (~2800 on the 'ol janka scale) but I wasn't 100% sure.

Either way, she's a real stunner Mist; I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more of this beauty in future posts!

I'm curious about that too, Will. In an exchange recently, Ken mentioned that snakewood is stabilized. It is harder even than ebony! But because of other properties, some knifemakers prefer it stabilized.

I have the same question now, as it does not look or feel like stabilized wood. I have a better idea how to catch the attention of someone who can answer that though. I'll start a thread with that exact question :)

Oh, you'll see more soon, I'll need to patina the blade some before the article photos...therefor I have to use it :D

Maybe a helpful tip: if you would like to partially repair that blemish, you can ask for a scrap piece of the liner material, sand the material down with a coarse grit sandpaper, and collect the dust. Mix the dust in a clear expoxy like G-flex to make a paste. Carefully fill the void and scrap level or leave a tad high. Allow to dry and sand smooth with fine or ultra fine sand paper. It won't be absolutely flawless, but it fill the void and make it barely noticeable.

I learned this from fixing cork handles on fishing rods and have used this method on other wood projects.

Hope this helps you or someone with a similar issue.

Thanks for that tip, Ken said they would fill/tidy it up best they could before shipping - I'm on the road at the moment and haven't received the knife yet but I'm sure it will look great. The flaw was so minimal that I'm not keen to test my skills on this one! Cheers.

My Eucalyptus Burl Kephart finally made it's way to Japan, considering it was a 'second' to me it looks flawless with a blued blade to boot! Very happy camper.

Indoor pics don't really do it justice.

Gorgeous knives! The Kephart is my favorite, but that's probably obvious by the thread I just started. I feel like it's not FF's first or most prolific model, but doesn't play second fiddle to any knife I've seen.

It's like lab is to dog.

Buck 110 (or Case peanut) is to pocket knife.

Fiddleback Kephart is to bushcraft knife.

Anyway, the Kephart wins my imaginary award. :D
