eureka tents

I had a Eureka Apex 2 from about 1997 to last summer. I used it hard and never had a problem with it. It never leaked through many a frog-strangling rain. I finally sold it to a kid at a tag sale when I got a Kelty Gunnison 2 as a gift. The Apex still had some life in it yet.

I also have a Timberline 4 ( the XT version with vestibules) for car and family camping. It is well made, easy to use and water resistant, but we've decided that we'd prefer something roomier inside than the A-frame shape.

Both are excellent tents for the money.

I have a Eureka Spitfire Duo, and it has treated me well. It's the only Eureka tent I have used, so I can't offer much of a comparative commentary - but in terms of size, I find that it's nice and cozy for two people, or spacious enough for one person + pack and gear. If you're looking for something relatively compact (for two people + baby), a tent around the size of the Spitfire Duo would be good.

In terms of quality and design, it is easy to put up and take down, reasonably light, and the rain fly has made it through some truly monsoon-like weather without failing.

All the best,

- Mike

I have a Eureka Apex 2XT and I love it. It only cost me about a hundred bucks and its held up great for me. Its the perfect size for two people and i really like the space for gear under vestibules. Ive never owned a really expensive tent but i dont really know what more id want out of a tent. its a little on the heavy side i guess but split between two people its not bad. Goes up quick, haven't had any problems with leaking. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Eureka tent.

I'll give you some advise if you can get me a deal on one too;)

I have one not sure of the model, but they are great tents and I highly recommend them. They are durable, breathable and easy to pack and set up.

I've used the Apex and the "2XT"model , it's a good light tent. All the forest firefighters in Manitoba are issued one of the two, and aside from broken poles I haven't had or heard of any issues with them. I think the older model has half as many segments in the poles so when theyre folded theyre twice as long, aside from that I didnt really notice any difference.

I just bought a Eureka Alpenlite XT, A frame 4 season tent. Haven't used it yet, but it seems top notch. It's a little more complicated to set up than the geodesic tents, but it came with aluminum poles and it's made of more durable fabric. The other 4 season tents I was considering used material almost half the weight and while they are lighter I've heard first hand accounts of how long (or little) they last.

get the apex2xt. it is a 3 season tent with a full vestibule. that seems to be a favorite with BSA. I see alot of the BSA guys have those when hiking.

I've got a Mountain Pass 2XT. It's a fantastic tent that has stood up to some serious wind and rain storms. It's also quite light for it's size, very roomy, and totally waterproof. Once in the Catskills I pitched the tent in an area that happened to be in the mountain runoff path. It poured that night and I woke up in a virtual stream. The floor of my Eureka! tent felt exactly like I was lying on a water bed but not a drop of water leaked through. Inside it was bone dry.

Although the preceding suggestions are undoubtedly more practical and cheaper, if you want bombproof and can get a good discount, the K2 is one of Eureka's very sturdiest tents. It is quite comfortable for two and will handle two plus child. The only downside is that it is too heavy to be a good backpacking tent. But for car camping, canoeing/rafting, horsepacking, etc. it is one of the strongest tents out there.

Had a Eureka Equinox for years for just camping and later gave it to my nephew who still uses it and a Lightweight Kelty for Backpacking. The Eurekas are excellent tents and if you are getting a discount then even better. I was once privy to a discount on those. I worked at a Sporting goods store and back in the day the Employee discount straight from Eureka was 25% off wholesale. Man I miss those days!!! Minus the rude retail shoppers:P

The model you choose all depends what you're intending to do with it? Car camp, backpack?

In 1981 I bought an Eureka Timberline 2 for backpacking (primary) and car camping (seconday purpose) for myself, wife and young son. It has worked perfectly! The options and selection back then we're not anywhere close as plentiful as they are today. We used it for backpacking and car camping - from the heights of Colorado to the Pac NorthWet. It was used easy and used hard.

We still have the tent...and it is still in very good condition in spite of the last 28 years. It needs to be re-treated and seams resealed this year but I still use it as my summer - fair weather tent. I think this speaks well for both their design and workmanship.

I have a Zeus2, the older model that looks more like a Backcountry, and it's a good tent. It's probably a great hiking tent if your in low-humidity areas. In FL, any single-walled tent sucks.

The Autumn Wind series and Mountain Breeze look like great tents.

yeh she works for johnson bank which is owned by johnson and johnson, who has a ownership stake in eureka.

For two adults I'd recommend a 4-person tent.

I'm not a huge fan of Eureka's current lineup*, but do consider the Tetragon tents.

If you've got the money, the Equinox 6 is a larger rock solid tent.

*I prefer aluminum poles, clip-ons rather than pole sleeves, fully breathable inner tent walls, real vestibules. Some of their newer models - like the Autumn Wind and Mountain Pass XT are promising, but not large enough for two adults, a growing baby, and gear.
