So at the hospital, this guy got hired a few months ago. He was from Southern California, and we were talking and then the subject happened to switch to knives. He was very against private ownership of "dangerous knives" and opposed to civilian ownership of any knife that could be opened one handed... be it thumb hole or thumbstuds or whatever.

So I pegged him as a hippie-liberal-commie and just let it be. But he was a nice guy and we ended up talking about it a few times, and at one point he made a comment like "well since we are in Virginia and knife laws allow these kind of things I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to trying to have one around the house" so I gave him an old Maxam linerlock I had laying around, and gave it to him. Shortly after he went to firefighter training.

I saw him yesterday for the first time in weeks and he told me that since he started firefighter training, he had to use his knife 5+ times a day, so he started carrying it around the house and around, and now he feels naked without one. He is now expressing an interest in getting a Benchmade and was talking about how he wants a recurved knife (apparantly he has been doing his homework).

Bottom line:

Knife owners - 1
Anti-knife people - 0

good to see someone realising that knives are TOOLS and not just weapons

also, you do realise that the ownership of guns/knives etc. is extremely liberal.

ie. the liberty of the individual to own what they want to own and do what they want to do so long as they are not harming others through their actions.

Tell that to the liberals

But we don't need to get into that here :D

true. but often those deemed 'conservative' in the US actually conform far more to the ideas of the classical liberal philosophers.

anyway, I was always taught from a young age that a knife is a tool, just like any other, and not a weapon.

I don't think I'd even pull out my edc if I got into a fight, I have no intentions of stabbing anyone and i hate that people assume i carry a knife as a weapon or as self defence.

in other words --> :thumbup:

I feel ashamed of that Southern Californian. It's usually the Northern Californians that are like that.

yep, true liberals are libertarians these days

glad you guys liked the story, I've given out probably around 50 cheapo knives over the years, with pretty good success most of the time.

Once someone owns a knife, feels it in their hand, and knows it is theirs, they usually realize it is not an evil object, and it is silly for the government to try to take it away

res1cue, you know what they say about sugar and vinegar . . . :D
Sometimes it better to listen and learn than to talk and not hear. Good going for you for what and how you explained and let him make his own decisions.
Hope everything works out for you and he.
Be safe.

Tool versus weapon. Except there are potentially dozens of potential "weapons" in nearly any room or situation. Not a lot of tools though . . .

Awesome. Another person sees the light.

Before you know it that poor man is going to be a member on this forum and then he'll be entirely beyond help. :D

Nice gesture- Well done.
It's not rocket science for someone (especially one who has begun Firefighter training) to see the utility of a good tool.
Good on ya for putting him down the right path.

A local Get together here in the Bay Area:

This was just the Emersons. No one planned it either. I believe this was about half the knives that were at the restaurant (not including swords).

The last office I worked at, everyone admired my knives. Some of them started carrying knives themselves afterward.

The discussion of politics and political leanings or agendas are not welcome in the general forum and that is clearly stated in the stuck thread at the top.

We have a forum for that type of discussion.

It should not be that difficult for a reasonable person to understand.
