Hi Shop Talk,

First post here, I've been lurking a while - wanting to wait until I actually had a question! So far most of my questions have been answered fairly fast via the ol' search feature. Also I wanted to thank Shop Talk formally as i spend a good deal of time on here reading and learning! So thanks to all of you frequent posters!

So at any rate, how do you all keep your grinds so even?!?

It seems like I'm having to cleanup a good deal with files and paper/block to get the grind even, especially at the tip of the blade.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

The same way you get to Carnigie hall. Practice man, practice. And no, Im not there either.

Mark your lines and go easy. Do a little at a time until you get there. Clean up with files and/or sandpaper is fine.

I think using the right grit, and the right speed, and a sharp enough belt are key. And practice! If the grit is too course or the speed too fast, I feel that I can feel the blade. To dull and you are pushing and polishing, not cutting. Oh, and practice!

When I took everyone's advice here and stopped using belts so long my grind lines started looking much better. It's a bit hard to stomach at first. Although I still use the older belts to profile.

Trusting my center scribe line, measuring the bevels constantly with calipers, and trying not to rush things

Ryan,
After you have marked your center lines use fresh sharp belts and take off about half the steel you want totally removed with each belt progression.

36, 60 & 120 grit belts is my progression. When people use belts that are past their prime they tend to use too much pressure and that can give you divots and the like.
