I have one. I really like it and dont plan to sell it though. The only complaint I have is it is designed as a ceramic kiln even though it has a front swinging door. It is wider and taller than I need for just a few blades at a time. If I were doing several and had them on racks it would be a good size though. Also the directions that come with it are for ceramic use. I had a little trouble figuring out how to set the times and temps. but Im not very smart on that stuff anyway. I would consider a Paragon if I had it to do again.
Front loading ovens seem to be few and far between on the secondary market. I sold a small one recently when I upgraded to an 18" Evenheat. I searched for a used one for quite a while before I purchased the Evenheat. I like it. I don't think it's too wide, but it is a little tall. The programming instructions I received were clearly written. They probably updated them since Bruce bought his. Friends of mine have Paragon's, and they are pleased with them. I chose the Evenheat because I heard good reports and it was priced lower.
Yea, I found that they sell a 13 1/2 inch deep Evenheat. That's the one I'm looking at. About $900 for the digital control model. I have decided I won't be happy unless I can treat the super steels myself and that is why I am willing to bite off the big bucks. I really like the 01 I am starting out with but I just gotta do the supers.
I am going to take the advise of checking out the Paragon too before making the big plunge. I think I saw some in some resent web searches. Seems like they were a bit higher cost(???). Don't know for sure. I like the looks of the relatively small size of the 13.5 inch oven and it may cover all the hunting and kitchen style knives I am interested in (trying) to make.
rlinger, if you find a paragon cheap (well cheapest anyway), please post it here. I've been looking for an oven myself and will probably have to go with a new one.
Just for info, Paragon has a new digital controller and can update their older ovens. I had both of mine upgraded and now they will reach 2400°. The new controller has a lot more options. I traded in the older ones and best I remember, paid $150 each. Sounds high but IMHO, was worth it.
I like my even-heat with the rampmaster controls
I had mine custom built a foot longer then their biggist
so I can treat some swords and machetes.
I could use a smaller one for smaller jobs though.
it could heat a little faster I'm thinking too. (wishing)
I looked at the Paragon site last night. I checked their specs on the smaller knife oven. It specified a max. of 2000 F. I wonder if the new controller is an option or perhaps only available on a larger model? I'll look again and perhaps call next week about that. I did like the 120 volt feature. The Even-Heat specifies 220 volt only.
