Eveness of Commander Bevel

Just received a Black Commander and the Bevel gets alot bigger towards the tip, almost 50%. Is this a normal production variation? It looks pretty bad the way the silver edge is constant till just before the tip. Then it gets much wider and looks very uneven against the black blade.

My new CQC7-A has this same bevel problem towards the tip. However my knife is a satin finished model so it's not as noticeable as it would be on a BlackT finished knife like yours. I noticed in a knife store I was in today that the Commander they had on display also showed this same problem. However, I'm not too concerned by it. In fact, the wider bevel towards the tip actually leaves less surface area towards the tip resulting in a knife that might actually penetrate better than one that was manufactured correctly.

If it bothers you, you should definately return the knife and exchange it. For the money you pay for an Emerson, you should get an even primary bevel. However, I'm still not sure if I'm going to exchange mine or not.

I just got my Commander this morning, and looking at it right now, the bevel definately increases toward the tip, however it is nowhere near 2x wider, and looks fine. In fact, it kind of gives the look of better penetrating ability, so it doesn't bug me. Lock up is great, liner moves less than half way across blade even with a strong Wave opening. Fit of the scales to the liners could be better, but overall I'm very happy with the knife.

The newest Commanders have a slightly different grind to them. Sounds like you have the latest version, probably a 2000 marked blade.

I compared a 1998 serialized Commander to a 2000 version here.

I just got my new satin commander today, and the bevel does get bigger near the tip (but only a little wider).

John,
I guess it's a 2000 model, because of the serrated liners behind the wave. Does the markings on the blade indicate manufacturing date ? (the number 20100 is marked under the USA markings)

Ed

That is a 2000 model. The line in the middle of the 2000 is a carry over from the logo above.

The new grind allows the blade to retain thickness further out toward the tip.

John, actually mine is marked as a '99 model. I guess I just got lucky.

I should be getting the early mil-spec in the mail this week. I'll put them side by side and give a comparison.

Looking more closely at it, mine too has the liners serrated behind the Wave. What does this indicate as far as model year (the blade does say 99)?

Disclaimer

I am not a Commander expert, I just aown a few of them.

That having been said:

My serialized '98 has the fat feeling grip, old grind and no serrations behind the wave.

My '99 has the thinner feel, old grind and serrations behind the wave.

My '99 CN has the thinner feel, old grind and serrations behind the wave.

My 2000 has the thinner feel, new grind and serrations behind the wave.

All of mine have phillips head screws on the body, but a buddies '98 serialized (lower number then mine) has flat headed screws on the body.

I have a Satin Commander on order and am waiting on a Green-T bladed model too.

I'll also order a pair of fancy Custom/Production Commanders when they become available.

Now if I could swing the $1200 for the Ti Commander!

And I need a factory left handed.

Then there's the Commander trainer. Do they offer that in both right and left handed?

I think I need to work more OT.

John, great info!! Thank you. It appears that I have the 99 model: thinner feel, serrations behind the wave, and what must be the old grind (and the blade is marked 99). My pivot screw is a flat tip, however, and I'm not carrying it today to check whether the smaller screws are phillips or flat tip. Interesting.

Just to clarify, every pivot screw I have seen has been a flat tip screw. It's just the scale screws that were different.

John

Thanks, John. I'll check it out when I get home, but I'm betting I have phillips scales screws.

I was wrong! Mine has all flat tip screws. Which is odd because even my '99 CQC7 has phillips screws attaching the scales. John, does this mean I have an elusive "one-off" worth thousands??

Seriously, I'm starting to think the blade is newer than the rest of the knife. No big deal, I'm just curious.

Just got in my new digital camera, so let me attempt to show the changes. The 2000 Commander is always on the top and the 1998 is on the bottom.

Here you can see the difference in the thickness of the scales and lines. The serrations on the liner behind the wave is also seen here.

Here is an attempt to show the new tip grind.

Notice the top inside of the 2000's liner. There is a definate change on the inside of the newer Commanders. I couldn't tell you what it is, but I'm sure it's for the better.

John,

On your last pic, the change to the top liner is the addition of the 2nd ball detent.

Ed

John,
Great pics. How do you move them over from Photopoint so that they appear in the Forum?
Thanks.

John, thanks for the pics! My blade is definately the new grind, and I do have the serrations behind the Wave on the liners. I guess they just used up the old batch of slotted scale screws on my handle. No biggy.
