Evenheat 22.5"(220V) vs. 18.5"(120V)

I was pretty much set on the 22.5 but now I am hesitating. I know you should always buy the biggest you can but I am thinking that 18.5 would be enough and the 120V would be a real plus as I would need some major electrical upgrade for the higher voltage kiln.

Anyone have one of those and can maybe help me in my decision?

I have the 18.5" on 220volts. I do have to unplug my grinder to run it. But I wish I had bought the 22.5" model because on the bigger blades the point is closer to the coils than I would like.
One day I will have to have a service change.
Good Luck!!!

22.5" is a great size. And 220v is hard to beat. It won't take much for 18.5 to feel a little cramped.

The 120v is slooooow to heat up, however I am still able to use the kmg, disc grinder and hydraulic press (one at a time) on my only 220 outlet in the shop while it is heating up so that is a definite plus.

I was so hoping one of you was gonna say "I have a 120V and it comes up to heat in 5 minutes". ;)

Consensus is for the 220V and then 22.5 is a no brainer.

Thanks guys.

when i got my kiln i said all i need is 18 inch (most large kitchern knives are 15" or so right ) well i wish i had a 22 and really im planning on buying or building a 36 with a small chamber all 220v for ease of parts replacment

I reviewed the prototype of the 120V 18" model here

The only difference to the current models is the controller. We only stock the rampmaster now and all come with the door safety switch. It should take about double the time to heat up (VS the 220V). I still use ours for full heat treat cycles when our others are full. Our experience is about 90 minutes to 1900 or so. If speed or the extra depth is important to you, the 220V is definitely the way to go.

These are the times I recorded for a 440C cycle

Time Temp
0:00 79F
4:03 400F
5:05 500F
6:15 600F
7:45 700F
9:35 800F
11:52 900F
14:48 1000F
18:21 1100F
22:44 1200F
27:49 1300F
30:00 1336F
34:40 1400F
42:13 1500F
51:19 1600F
60:00 1681F

1:13:27 1800F

Hope that helps some.

Rob!

I have the 22.5" 220 volt model, with the Rampmaster 3 digital controller. I am just tickled silly by it. I absolutely love it.

this is true!

I have the 220 18.5 and it is great but the extra length would be nice on my bigger blades.

I am thrilled with my Evenheat and use it on almost every knife.
Like has been mentioned above, I wish I had purchased the 22.5.
Ask all your girlfriends - bigger is better - regardless of how much control you have.

I would definatly go 220v. Aside from heat-up times, 220v is a lot cheaper to run. I have the 22.5/220v and hardly notice a change in the utility bill. The air conditioner is worse.....................
