Evenheat Bill Burke special?

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a kiln and I've been going back and forth between Paragon & Evenheat. I was leaning towards Paragon because I've read the exterior doesn't get as hot, but I like the Evenheat sizes better. Now I'm think of an Evenheat KO 13.5 with TAP and the "Bill Burke Special" mod. I was hoping to get some feedback from someone that has the mod... Does it make a worthwhile difference? Will any of the retailers know what I am talking about when I ask for it? Any idea of current lead times on an Evenheat?

Thanks,

Check with Tru Grit. They have the best prices I've seen, and I think they're aware of the mod.

Paragon finally wised up and started building ovens with 10 inch wide chambers like Evenheat.

Well... I guess I'll find out for myself. Just ordered the Evenheat with the mod

Congratulation on your new purchase Matt. I may purchase something similar but it may have to wait until next year. Not knowing much about options for heat treat ovens, could someone tell me what the Bill Burke mod is? Sorry for sidetracking the thread, but I couldn't find an answer using search.

I think the mod is extra insulation added so the out side shell does not get as hot.

JT is correct the BB mod is a thin layer of insulation that keeps the outer shell from getting too hot. It sill gets hot but I'm sure it is much better than with no insulation.

I don't have the tap controller but have the ramp master and after 2 years I'm still very happy with it. If I had one piece of advice for you I would say spend the extra 100$ or so and get an 18" or better the 22.5" model, if its not too late. After factoring in 1-3" to keep the blade away from the coils 13" can be limiting, especially for full tangs.

Happy Heat Treating

as to the kiln length i thought 18 wouel do it but more and more i find it too short. my next one will be 27-32 inch depending on pricing as i have 50 amp service to the kiln outlet (planned ahead )

Not much I can add here. seem to have all been covered.

So let me get this straight. You came up with an idea that adding more insulation would keep the oven from getting warm on the outside and they named a mod after you??!! :D

I'll add my two cents. It's like a super insulated house. A lot of folks say it's stupid but keep paying the utility bills every one else pays. But I'll add the benefits of super insulating is a lot more. As for us in the knife building world it means quicker times to come to temp. More consistent temps etc. To be honest it just makes common sense which for a lot of folks seem to be short of lately. I own a super insulted house and a homemade knife kiln with super insulated. I couldn't be happier with both.
