I'm preparing to order an evenheat oven and just curious which controller folks get with their oven, Set Pro, or Rampmaster ?

It seems to me that number pad and more programs are the only benefit to the Rampmaster over Set Pro.

It sure sounds relatively simple to program the set pro even if working or experimenting with a steel that is not a normally used steel.

Is it worth the extra $$$ to get the rampmaster ?

I have the set-pro on mine and it does the job,a little quirky about learning to program it but no big deal. I only do a few steels so once I got it programed I don't mess with it much. The one thing I would do over is get a bigger oven. I got the 13-1/2" and wish i would have gone to the next size up.

Stan,
Thanks for the reply. I'll certainly not go any smaller than the 18" and I'm leaning towards the 22.5 . I can't imagine regretting going with the larger so thats most likely what I'll do.

Josh, mine is the rampmaster 22.5. You can come over and play with it if you like. I would not go any smaller.

Wick,
That sounds like a good plan. I've got a few blades of 1080 profiled so perhaps I can have them ground and ready for heat treat by this weekend.

Let me know when you wanna get together. I was thinking that next time I came up I'd ask Dave (DCknives) if he wanted to come along but figured I should run it by you first.

Mine has the set pro, and I like it just fine, just keep the manual handy while programing.

Josh,

We've got a 22.5 with Set-Pro. I don't have a problem with re-programing for different steels. One of the fellows would like to have saved programs for his different steels so maybe down the road he will switch out for the other contoller.

Step down spheroidizing is easier to deal with using the other contoller.

If a person HT'ed a 12" blade with 5" tang, a 22.5" would have enough room... the shorter kilns wouldn't.

Josh, next weekend sounds good. Sure, bring Dave. Saturday if that works for you, but any day of the week would also be OK, just let me know.

Wick,
Saturday is good for me as well so we'll plan on that. I'll let Dave know and see if he can come along and hang out for a day of knife and gun chatting and heat treating oven instruction, LOL.

Thanks again for the offer, I'll be looking forward to it !

Just a dissenting opinion. The SetPro proved so unpopular with our customers, we have stopped stocking it and we need to special order if someone wants it. There is no quality advantage to the rampmaster - it is just easier to use and holds a dozen programs instead of four. It is also rare for us to get an order for anything other than the 22.5 inch. Lastly, we won't sell an oven without the door power interrupt switch. Messing around live coils with tongs or pliers is just wrong.

In short, both items are well worth the small extra cost.

Rob!
