I am looking to get an Evenheat kf18 oven. Can anyone give me some help on SetPro vs. Rampmaster vs. TAP controller, given that the increase in price is about $80 from one model up to the next?

I'm not sure if this matters, but given my current situation the oven will be completely unplugged when not in use, at least for now. I don't know how that might affect the programming.

Thanks,
Walt

The memory is resident, so power isn't needed. A lot of folks like the TAP.

There are lots of past threads about it:

Enter TAP controller

You should also order your oven with the "Bill Burke Special" upgrade. It is a heavier insulation package that one of our members came up with. It is really worth

Thanks! I think I have seen the Burke Special mentioned before but had forgotten about it. My shop is pretty small so more insulation should really help. Is there a particular supplier (Jantz, USA Knifemaker) that I need to use for this upgrade?

Just a little advice from someone that purchased a new EH a few years back. If you want the 18KF, get the 22.5KF. I went with the Rampmaster because the TAP was not available yet. After playing with the TAP at Tracy's Hammer-In last year, and talking with the owner of EH I really wish I had the TAP. The price difference between the 18 and the 22.5 is negligible, so for me it's worth the little extra. If I only worked with one steel I would consider the Set-Pro, otherwise get the Rampmaster. I'm considering upgrading to the TAP on mine, but I'm also holding off to see what other great things they come up with. If you have any questions, give them a call. They are great people and happy to help.

Thanks, I've pretty well decided on the TAP controller. I am curious what the reason is to go with 22.5 model rather than the 18 other than the small cost difference? My shop is pretty small and I don't anticipate ever making anything larger than maybe a Bowie which could go out to 18". I'm open to be being convinced though.

BTW, looking at their website, Evenheat has another controller called the Genesis. Something I saw makes me think it will be about the same cost as the Tap. I don't know much else though.

I second what the others have said. Get the Bill Burke mod and go with the 23.5". Keep in mind you will lose an inch or two because you can't stick the blade right up against the coils because they get to hot. Also you may not want to make a bigger blade now but if you do in the future, most of us like to experiment or try something new, then you can do it and you wont regret not being able to because you didn't spend $100 more.

I have the rampmaster and I like it but the TAP controller looks pretty slick. My only concern with it is its durability. I figure after another year or so we'll find out whether folks are having issues or not. I have no reason to doubt it but I do work in technology and know that chips and electronics don't like heat and abuse. Another reason to get the Bill Burke mod.
