Evenheat won't program past 1800?

So I'm getting around to doing a heat treat with the new Evenheat 18" I got, and the temp setting for any segment I program won't exceed 1800 degrees. I'm doing CPM S3V, so I need to get beyond that... is there a setting or a step I'm missing? I've perused the manual and setup guide, but nothing seems to indicate that this should be happening. Anyone have any insight?

that's odd, I've set up mine to 2150 before. doesn't sound like it's programmed correctly.

story of his life... he can never get it hot enough
and therefore, not hard

Stop thinking about me naked, PLB...

Tracy, I'm not sure where I can be doing this wrong, but I'm certainly not willing to rule out user error!

Going to try reprogramming the user setting one more time, then I'll call Tim Zowada. Hope he won't kill me for calling on a Sunday!!:o

Well you need to get your book out and go over all the steps and it will work. The one I use here will go up to 2300 degrees. There something you are not doing right. Please check all your steps. :)

Max temp is set at the factory during the EPROM programming, so there is always a possibility you have an incorrectly programmed chip for a HT furnace. Some of their glass kilns don't go above 1800F.

The max temperature is programmable. The dealer you purchased it from should be able to guide you through it. IF not, let me know by email and I'll pass it on. Will need to know which controller.

Since 1800 degrees C is roughly equal to 3270 F, I'm assuming you have it set on Fahrenheit not centigrade, so it sounds like a call to tech support is in order.

It just ocurred to me, this is Sunday and you want to do heat treating. Email me and I'll try to get the answer to you.

Rob!

ps; I'll be out for a couple hours, but will check when I get back.

A wonderful offer, Rob... if it's a lot of work on your behalf, no worries. I'm in no rush to get this project done. If it's a simple process for you to relate to me via email, try my yahoo account:

Thanks so much!!!!:)

There something you are not doing right.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Terry!

kinda what I was thinking. i didn't know about their glass kilns but it seems they have a hard stop programmed in. Hopefully it's not because of lawyers...in that case when you call in they will lower it another 100 degrees just to be safe.

Matt, if you need temps that high, you are using the wrong steels ;) :D

By Jove, you're right! I think you need to send me 50 or 60 pounds of 2" square bar W2 samples so I can get the heat treat down right...:D:D:D;);)

Good thing there's guys like you around that are willing to send out free samples like that for guys like us!;)

PS- I'm not kidding, Don - you can send me as much free W2 as you want.

Actually, I do have some W2... it's in round bar, and I should be using it more now that I have greater control of my temps for heat treat. I LOVE your blades, btw... I'm sure I've said that to you before, but it bears repeating.:)

...you can still give me more W2 if you want!:D

Anybody else having this problem? I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on an Evenheat, and I need to get it to around 1800 for A-2. If there's a hard stop at 1800, that's kind of pushing it.
- Thanks

This is just a default programming hardstop they put in at the factory. I ran into the same thing when I first got mine. You can change the default max temp in less than 5 minutes.

I will go out to the shop and see if I can dig out the steps to do it and post them in this thread for Matt as well as the future poor saps that are going to be having a stroke the first time they try to enter a program in their new kiln.

ok.. found it. (edit- this is for a Rampmaster controller)

Top limit for max temp for an evenheat oven is 2200 degrees. To change the default setting:

Press OTHER - display=RSET
Enter 443 - display=NOTC
Press OTHER - until MAX is displayed
Press ENTER
The display will show the max temperature it is set to currently. Change to the correct temperature, 2200 degrees.
Press ENTER
IDLE/temp now shows on display.

Thats all there is to it. I don't know why they insist on sending these "knifemaking" ovens out with a default setting of 1800 degrees, or at least add the instructions into the manual. They are fully aware that they are being used a knife ovens. I guess their tech support people are bored and like answering the same question over and over.

Brad, you're the best. Thanks for the instructions; I'd probably be using the "bigger hammer" technique without them.
