Ever Been Afraid to Finish a Knife?

There are definitely days when it's not happening and we all have them. But as a wise person once pointed out to me, a really good artist can often take themselves back to that place where the work can be done just by doing a little meditating on it. That could mean simply doing a bunch of busy work around the shop, maybe fooling with some idea that you had a while ago and kept putting off trying. If I start playing with my new belts for instance and put my new bandsaw blade on (thanks for the Ellis suggestion, Michael! :)) then I might be ready to catch that wave and get into the finish stage on the folder. My old blacksmithing mentor always referred to it as the proper "headspace." Music often helps me as well.

Yep, I know the feeling. Got one now that I need to finish, but I keep putting it off until the next night. Gotta scratch it tonite so I can finish it!--Dan

Count me in! What I try to remind myself is that I usually pull it off and I can always rebuild it. I also try to remind myself to have fun!

Very good post Peter.
I love the saying " The Enemy Of Good Is Better ". How many times
I just wanted to make it just a little better, only to screw it
up. I have probably wasted more time doing something by hand that
I could do very quickly on the machine, but I was afraid that I
would mess it up. Continual confidence, what a dream.
