Ever been cut by a folder whose liner lock failed?

I've still got a healing cut from a week or so ago. I have a cheap Chinese folder that I keep around as a beater (not because it's strong...it's not, but because I don't care if it falls apart). I was cutting up some boxes for spare bits of cardboard. I'm not really sure what happened, but one second I was cutting normally and the next the tip was cutting into my palm and the knife was shutting mid-cut. The liner lock is pretty thin and easy to disengage, so it was probably only a matter of time. Luckily, the cut was shallow so I only had to deal with a little plain.

Safe to say I'll be retiring that knife.

I have a knife like that, an assisted opening El Cheapo from China. $10 piece of crap. I cut and ground the heck out of that blade and don't trust the lock on the knife, as there is just too much looseness, starting with the overly thick spacers and general flex of it. So, I use it for general cutting as a beater, but am careful to not stress it too much. Not planning on opening cans with power jabs, like I do with my Cold Steel Mini Lawman. If El Cheapo cuts me, it won't be pretty.

Nope. Never have. I use my knives with the edge pushing against what I'm cutting.

Call me crazy, but I use the sharp side of my knife! gasp.

A well used Kershaw Blur. I had just sharpened it up and oops my finger became a blade stop. Eight stitches in my left index and a numb spot for about two years now. Kershaw went over and above to make it right so no hard feelings there. Just won't do liners anymore.

Wow...

How did it fail? What were you doing for it to close on you like that?

IF we are talking about actual structural failure rather than being "defeated" (i.e. - the lock being inadvertedly disengaged by the torquing action of the user's grip), back in '04 (July I think?) I was chipping a solid block of ice for drinks at some outdoors gathering. Thankfully only nicked my pinky finger. It was an S&W folder afterall (SWAT model).

. . . Before I'm relegated to the "Idiot" section though for not using an ice pick, (ice is almost hard as stone) I wasn't "stabbing" at it full tilt. I was only chipping at it in small, consistent strokes from a few inches. It was a folder afterall!

Now if we are talking about Al Mar SERE 2000 or a Blackhawk Crucible though, that's another story.

Yes, by an old CRKT Red Dog (I think that's what it was called). About 10 years ago, pre LAWKS. Caused by sudden pressure on the spine (not a whack). 3 stitches on my index finger and still have nerve damage.

I've heard enough horror stories about locks failing that I, like harkamus, only use my folders with the sharp side pushing against what I'm cutting. As a result, I too have never experienced a lock failure. On the other hand, I've gotten rid of a couple of folders that didn't lock up properly or consistently. There's no use intentionally putting myself in harm's way.

liner lock flat out failure? never

liner lock accidental disengagement? yes, i had a smith and wesson supertacticalswatnavysealgreenberetdeltaforce that i was whittling with years ago and it accidentally closed up and i still have a numb patch and a scar on my index finger

i stay far away from linerlocks if i can help it, but there are two that i consistently trust: al mar sere 2000 and zt 0200

Haven't ever had a liner lock fail or disengage accidentally. However, I have a knife with a Boye detent mid lock that will fail if you grip the knife extremely hard.

I've had liner locks since they first became available in the mid 80's. I have never had one to fail on me. I've a couple that scared me with their thiness and the flexing they would show, but I got rid of these.:) Otherwise, the only knives I've been cut with have been slipjoints and fixed blades, and that was when I was young and stoopid!

I have never been cut by any locking blade knife because the lock failed.

I have never had any knife whose lock failed.

I've never had a lock fail on me, or been cut using my knives, I get cut usually playing with my knives lol.

I was cutting some tape between a door that had been taped shut and with a quick up stroke the blade hit the door latch and the lock gave out and closed one my finger. While this was the cut it was about 5 months later I was using the knife for the first time since I had the stitches to cut up a car tire. It was eating away and when I pulled the knife out it gave out without any force on the lock. So I tried it again and off it went. I called kershaw and was treated like a king just can't do liner locks again. (unless it my leatherman wave or skeletool but I am easy on the blades)
