Ever been disapointed in a new knife

Have you ever bought a new knife and after getting it home started looking at it in detail and noticed a few things that werent right, such as a blade being off center or metal shavings all down in the liner lock. My biggest pet peve is metal shavings..is it really that big a deal to wipe a knife down before it leaves the factory? Lets hear about your worst experiance.

Well at first I was a little disappointed with my Victorinox soldier: it had a few chips and a curved blade. Then I realized that it was overall very cool.

My Sebenza. I really expected too much, it just did not live up to my expectations. Nothing wrong with the knife - just a mental disappointment.

Yes. I got a CRKT Corkum First Strike that was so dull right out of the box it wouldn't cut butter. Make that, wouldn't cut room temperature butter. Talk about disappointed!

I'm disappointed everytime I buy a new high priced knife and it isn't quite perfect. But I've learned to accept that nothing is perfect so I don't let little things bother me.

Ever been disappointed in a new knife

My taste is becoming more and more discriminating and I find myself less and less impressed with new knives as time goes on. It takes high end customs just to peak my interest till the package arrives, and even then, I may not be disappointed, but the knife will get fondled for a few then put in a display case:yawn:

Camillus EDC. Handle was small, not very pointy at the tip. It's not that there was no point, but the design isn't particularly pointy. Too much curve too fast at the front of the blade for my uses it turned out. Pretty though.

Funny just thinking about this I'm buying more used knives to avoid let downs. Its working. had a CRKT Pez Shabz that rubbed from the get go sent it back they were out of stock so took Crawford Professional good trade up. Have a Spyderco Bob Lum Tanto that just touches at the tip so that will be going back to shop for check up.

Case yellow wharnie

There were still a lot of abrasives from poloshing the blade between the blade and liners and made the action very gritty. Cannot open it since it was a pin pivot and not screw. Finally had to use a power washer and sprayed on the blade between the liners to clear out the grits. Also 1/2 inch of the tip wasnt sharpened.

A Swamp Rat Bandicoot. I looked it over and yawned but figured "tomorrow is another day." The next day, it still did nothing for me. Go figure. geegee

I would say yes to the Rainbow Chive. That little bastard sure was small the first time I saw it! Sold to friend at work. Then I bought a Rainbow leek and all is good.

Otherwise, no.

Over the past year or so, my disapointment has been growing. At first, I would just get miffed.

I began to talk to Lynn Little every week or so by phone. Lynn is quite knowledgible about knives and electronics, and he does tremendous amounts of research on products. He is also a very moral man, in fact, he is one of the very few people I have showed picures of the inside of my home and my collection.

The reason I tell you that is we would speak in great detail on our new purchases. Perhaps a grind line was uneven, or a flat spot might appear for some unknown reason on a new S30V blade. Then I noticed time after time that most bevels were uneven, to the point that when one came uniform from the factory, it surprised me.

The exception was Buck. The products were reasonably priced, and the Q/C seemed better than most. One time I bought a small fixed blade for well under 100 bucks, and I was quite surprised to find a uniform bevel, and then the stamp, BOS ATS-34.

It got me thinking. If Buck can 'make a buck' out of quality steel, hardened by a name brand (Paul Bos) with a uniform bevel for such a price, what was the matter with other manufacturers? Why did I always have to take an Edge-Pro and straighten out their mistakes.

After all, the last six handguns I bought had no blemishes on them, at all. And it's been years since I've had a stoppage.

I am dissatisfied with the general market. I applaud Buck for their efforts.

edit: I am limiting my knife purchases this year, with one exception. I wanted a new Buck 110 because I am buying a new Harley. I ordered a custom BG-42 from their website. It came in 3 weeks, beautiful stag grips, razor sharp blade, and the mating of surfaces (stag to steel to brass) was almost perfect. A knife like this quality is 1/3 of the price I sometimes pay for others.

tarani master kerambit S30v - was really excited about the whole kerambit thing, got it, and it didnt fit my hand well, was very difficult to open (all are from what i've heard, at least when new)and stuck out of the top of my pocket too much for me. also once i looked/handled at the knife i just wasnt intrigued w/kerambits anymore. wasnt really shoddy workmanship/etc, just not for me i guess(the whole design, imho)

was very disappointed in the whole thing and sold it, did get almost all my $$ back, one plus i guess.

a mental one and 3 technical ones:

-technical: buck striders, 3 pieces both spear and tantos. all had excessive vertical blade-play. took em apart and fixed it myself, but only because the buck-striders are easy to dismantle yourself. quite disappointed.

-mental: spyderco military. had much anticipation about spyderco's tactical folder, received it and couldn't believe it. here was one 'flimsy' feeling lightweight knife. i wasn't concerned about the liner though, but more about the whole pivot-point in general, it seemed like it would snap very easily. also was concerned about tip-strength. funny enough the mili has become my favorite EDC tactical knife, but still don't have the same trust in the pivot and tip as i have with my al mar sere2000 and buck-striders.........

(anyone ever had their pivot on their miltary failed easily with sideways pressure??.....i'm curious)

Xikar Extreme. Expect to see it on the forum soon. (Still wondering what I was thinking when I ordered it.) Thankfully, it arrived with a cocobolo Tomcat, so my day wasn't a complete disappointment.

Recently, a Case mini CopperLock and a Spyderco SS Kiwi.

CopperLock...The point was rounded and protruded slightly above the liners when closed. The edge was, well, WHAT EDGE!?! One of the pins protruded from each side of the handle. After re-profiling the edge and point, filing off the kick and the pin, and re-polishing the whole thing, it is finally the way it should have been when it left the factory. Maybe someday Case will start building knives like they used to. I really love the design.

Kiwi...Nice knife. Cool Design. Just doesn't work in my hand. It's TOO ERGONOMIC. The edges on the blade back and inside the handles should be "softened" a bit.

hello there TBG.

i know you have a douple of duncan aftershocks, so you must have great taste in custom folders. i recently got a green canvas micarta duncan aftershock whose grinds i semi-mirrored, & i must say i'm enamored with the knife.

have you ever posted your entire folder collection? i already have the "let me see your framelocks" thread bookmarked, but i'm wondering if you'd ever post more of your stuff, or link me to threads where you've done so..

holler back, thanks.

Camillus Maxx. Mine had light scratches on the anodized handle and an off center blade. Good thing AG Russell has that no questions asked return policy. I also got a chance to handle a Busse for the first time at Blade last year. What a surprise! After using my khukuris and handling the forged bowies at the show, I found the Busses to be very poorly balanced. Not that they're bad knives, they just didn't feel right at all. That's not something you can pick up on from a picture.

I had a Kershaw Vapor from Walmart about a year ago. IMO it's one of the best buys for the buck. Well, I traded it for a Camillus EDC (which I love). I always intended to get another Vapor but I live a bit far from Walmart (where they have the best price), so I waited till the next oppurtunity and I bought another one. I was also minding my daughter at the time of purchase so I didn't notice that the knife was USED untill I got home. The lock goes all the way to the other side and the tip is rounded  . I lost the receipt and I don't know when the next time I'll be up there is.
