Over the past year or so, my disapointment has been growing. At first, I would just get miffed.
I began to talk to Lynn Little every week or so by phone. Lynn is quite knowledgible about knives and electronics, and he does tremendous amounts of research on products. He is also a very moral man, in fact, he is one of the very few people I have showed picures of the inside of my home and my collection.
The reason I tell you that is we would speak in great detail on our new purchases. Perhaps a grind line was uneven, or a flat spot might appear for some unknown reason on a new S30V blade. Then I noticed time after time that most bevels were uneven, to the point that when one came uniform from the factory, it surprised me.
The exception was Buck. The products were reasonably priced, and the Q/C seemed better than most. One time I bought a small fixed blade for well under 100 bucks, and I was quite surprised to find a uniform bevel, and then the stamp, BOS ATS-34.
It got me thinking. If Buck can 'make a buck' out of quality steel, hardened by a name brand (Paul Bos) with a uniform bevel for such a price, what was the matter with other manufacturers? Why did I always have to take an Edge-Pro and straighten out their mistakes.
After all, the last six handguns I bought had no blemishes on them, at all. And it's been years since I've had a stoppage.
I am dissatisfied with the general market. I applaud Buck for their efforts.
edit: I am limiting my knife purchases this year, with one exception. I wanted a new Buck 110 because I am buying a new Harley. I ordered a custom BG-42 from their website. It came in 3 weeks, beautiful stag grips, razor sharp blade, and the mating of surfaces (stag to steel to brass) was almost perfect. A knife like this quality is 1/3 of the price I sometimes pay for others.
