Ever been impressed buy a “cheep” knife?

I've been impressed by many, many inexpensive knives. There have been TONS of Kershaws, SAKs, Bucks etc, that fell into that category that were VERY good knives.

Recently it'd been Sanrenmu knives and it's siblings that have impressed me. Maybe not supersteel and exotic handles, but most of them are solid as a rock, and have a great fit and finish for even double the price.

All. The. Time.

Knife technology is extremely mature. That technology has long since trickled down to the bottom rung. Advancements are made by appending fancy letters and numbers to steel, adding bling, and smoothing out the corners. But the fundamental knowledge that makes a good knife is as old as humanity.

I have knives that were purchased brand new for less then $5 that impress me completely. What's also amazing is how shiny these man-baubles can be for under $30. But for me, cutting ability is the crucial quality I chase. And that can be had ridiculously cheap these days.

Out of all my knives my Opinel is probably the only one I can actually say I use every single day. I have one and Opinel #7 that I use daily to slice up an apple or a pear. I don't carry that one much because I only use it for cutting my fruit up to eat but I do love that knife. It slices better than any of my other knives. I also have a Rough Rider Barlow I paid ten bucks for and that is a very nice knife for the price.
