I let my family use my Spyderco Tenacious and my Benchmade 940
to cut some fruits and veggies in the kitchen. When I came home
I found them lying there in the sink with the rest of the dirty dishes
like they were tupperware or something. GAAASSSSP!!!

Any one ever get one of their knives disrespected?

yeah, I've let people borrow my Spyderco Centofante3, and found that they had been prying with it and ended up damaging the tip. Made me very angry.

Any time you loan your knife to someone you don't absolutely know is a fellow knife knut, you are exposing your knife to mortal peril.

You're lucky they didn't help out by sharpening them afterward.

Years ago I let one of my past co-workers borrow my Trekker as they were trying to open a light fixture to replace one of the bulbs.

He used the butt end of the knife to bang on the clip that held the cover to the fixture. I was in pain.

Never again...

Was felling an apple tree at an acquaintance's place a few years back, and she asked to borrow my Valiant Trading Company SGL to clear some brush elsewhere on the property. I said "sure", and went on with my business. When I got the SGL back, it was dull, and even chipped and rolled towards the end of the blade. :( She must have been hitting the soil with it... repeatedly! Luckily I got most of the damage out with a chakma and later, a belt grinder, but I'm always leary about who I let use my users now.

That is why all companies that make exquisite knives also make cheap knives.

I don’t let anyone borrow my primary knife (ves) -EDC, Camping, hiking, kitchen, or otherwise.

When car camping, I always have a Cold steel Finn Wolf that I keep close as a "Borrow Knife." If it is a person that I trust more, I will let them borrow a Mora.

I never let a person borrow My EDC folder. If they really need something they can use my Leatherman Micra blade or my Vic Tinker -but that is pushing it.

I have only known one other person in my life (who I was not related to, and who I knew personaly) that takes as much care of knives as I do. He is the only person I would let borrow one of my finer knives.

I carry a cheapy at work and that's what I dig out of my purse to hand to anyone wanting a knife. I've found it saves a lot of worry.
Around the house we have any and everything for whatever situation arises. So it's a non-issue there.

I'm happy to let friends or family use my knives...you know, share the love. If my knife can't handle a bit of use, then either it is not that tough of a knife or it is TOO Good. I don't have any knives that are TOO good (no shelf queens). I try to make sure what they are using the knife for is appropriate and not something stupid like trying to lift a trailer off of a hitch or something.
I do sometimes have to "re-train" my wife about the proper use of our good kitchen knives. But I'd rather have to re-hone a blade occasionally than restrict the use of a great tool.

Even if they don't get damaged, I still get upset cause they don't appreciate
them the way they should. Like sometimes you show someone the knife and
they look at it as if it's a toy. They literally treat it like it's worthless. I mean
you wouldn't take someones new digital camera or cell phone and just start
tossing it around with a big dumb grin on your face.

A little off topic but same concept. I also collect swords, nice ones. I can't
tell you how many times people come over and just grab it off the shelf with
NO PERMISSION and start waiving it around and holding it all retarded with a
big dumb grin. Cause to them it's a dumb toy. It's frustrating (not to mention
pretty dangerous!).

Next time I'll take their iphone and attempt to juggle it. In fact I think I'll
request collateral or a security deposit! You break you buy!

yeah one time i let my buddies and roomates at the time borrow an older spyderco i had. I thought they need to cut some things up or whatever, i never thought too much of it at the time. The NEXT day i found out they got drunk and were trying to throw it into the wall to get it to stick!!! Who the hell trys this with a folder??? I was not happy. The blade was half plain and half serrated, but when i got it back it looked ALL serrated, thats how bad it was chipped. The tip was gone and the liner lock was shot. The only reason i didn't freak and make them pay was cuz the lock on the knife was pretty much failed before they used it so it wasn't all that bad. I don't let anyone USE my umnum now, if they need something cut, i'll do it for them. One of my buddies asked recently while camping to use my umnum to cut a beer can open so we could shotgun some beers, I said sorry nope and handed him my keys, and said these work fine:D

A dumb@$$ walked into my dorm room and grabbed my AG Russell Stng that was sitting on my desk. "hey man this is badass!" started throwing it around, dropped it right on the point. Scuffed the finish real bad. Oh hey, sorry bro". Little airmen and knives are a bad combo all around. Especially if they wear a blue beret. I've had my 7 inch kabar thrown at me too, I was sharpening it on the couch and got up to take a wizz. Came back and my roomate walks in, sees the knife on the couch and says hey what is this? I told you not to leave your knives here! there were more choice words than that but he threw it at me across the room. I can't leave a knife unattended with sheeple for 60 seconds to use the bathroom or they flip out that it's gonna jump up and cut them or something...

I agree with most of the posts before mine. People just don't respect knives for the most part. They all just think they are all cheap pieces of crap and can be used for anything at any time. Like mentioned before, i don't ask someone to use their iphone and then throw it on the ground to use as a make-shift hockey puck. ALL my friends are hockey players. I wonder what they would think if i asked if i could see their one piece stealth hockey sticks that they use for their games. And instead of respecting it, i walked outside and started shooting rocks with it on cement. And then when they said wtf are you doing? I play dumb and go what? What am i doing wrong? Can't i do this with you stick???:jerkit:

Those Stealth sticks make great hafts for woodsplitting axes, to boot. They're basically a cold steel nightshade woodsplitter.

I fixed the problem of others ruining my knives. I don't let anyone use them anymore unless they know knives like I know knives. The last thing in the world I want is some moron handing me back a Sebenza with the blade all chipped and the tip twisted. If someone asks if they can use my knife I immediately ask them "where's your knife?" If they tell me they don't carry one I tell them "you should remedy that" and I continue on with my business. Everyone should carry a knife on them. Don't look at me like I'm a douchebag because I won't let you use my $400 knife.

I was sitting in a conference and my friend went up to the stage and got a trophy/cheap sword with a plaque. Being the resident "knife guy" he asked if he could see one of my knives, cause I carry a few. Being so proud of my knives and thinking he just wanted to admire it I handed him my Spydie Tenacious. It was about 10 seconds later I thought to myself "wait, hasn't he seen my knives and didn't he mention the screw on the plaque being loose." I then whipped around and grabbed my knife and lo and behold he was about to tighten that sucker. I happily gave him my swiss tool with a screwdriver on it. The worst part is that every body gave me a look like "what's the difference, the knife would have done the same job?" I held myself back from calling them ignorant sob's.

Yah, I encourage my wife to grab and use any knife I have so far collected--mostly affordable, but good quality mid-lower end knives. She has been partial to using the new Dozier Bobcat on a pond project. Looks like she picked the right tool for what she was doing. That knife just yells out "use me", and we intend to that.

Had a friend pry with my full sized Manix and the tip came off. My Leatherman Wave is the only knife I'll let someone use now because I won't worry if they break the blade on it.

You just don't know what people will do is the problem. I remember reading a story on this forum. The guy's friend asked to see the knife and knife guy hands it over. Non-knife guy looks at it... and then throws it against a door. Knife guy is like "What the hell are you doing?!?" Apparently non-knife guy thought that's what folders were for. That story scared me. I don't underestimate the level of stupidity that non-knife people can have about knives. If I hand a friend my knife, I ask what it's for. And even then, they get the knife that I won't worry about if they broke it.

I gave someone a victorinox climber with the cap lifter/ prybar open to pry open a nailed crate thing. He takes it, looks at the cap lifter, closes it, opens the blade and prys with that instead. Even though its a 20 dollar knife i still died a little inside :O
