Ever broken a Busse? If so, how? OOooo, this oughtta be good...or really boring

i just broke off a huge piece of my NICK  but then again, that was intended... and it involved a dremel....

i've only ever seen 3 broken busse's ever, all of wich were basics, all of wich were for testing purposes (and one intentional beater). never heard of a failure in actual use though...

I've broken my skin with Busses on more tha a few occasions. Especially with the AD. Pointy lil sucker.

I broke about an eighth of an inch off of the tip of an A-2 Mean Street.

I did a stupid thing.

I had a few cardboard boxs nested together, sitting in my living room.

The urge to throw came over me suddenly and I let fly. :D

It was the very first time I had ever thrown a Busse.

I grossly underestimated the penetration. :(

The Mean Street went through the nested boxes, through the carpet and the pad and stuck in the cement slab.

I went to get the knife out of the box and found the box pinned to the floor.

I lifted the boxes off of the floor and the knife stayed stuck in the floor.

I tried to get the knife out without breaking it but without success. :(

Took me about fifteen minutes to put a nice point back on the knife with a dremel tool.

I think some of my cooking mistakes could manage....

The only Busse I ever saw break in front of me was Jerry at Fogo. He was weaping with joy.... ;) :D

break a Busse???? is it possible??? I have never heard of it,, I sure would like to know how someone did it, I know Busse has surely made me ''broke" . :grumpy:

BUT IT'S ALL GOOD.. :D :D :D

The only two I recall hearing of were:

#1. Cliff Stamp had a Basic 7 that had been ground down to about a Basic 5.5, had a wire-breaking notch filed into the spine above the ricasso, and had part of the finish Dremel'ed off as well. Jerry posted some comments on the incident at the link below.

#2. OwenM broke a Basic 5while prying apart pallets to feed a firebarrel. His report of the breakage here:

Just a note regarding both of those basics that were broke, they had both been modified after they left the shop. This is one reason why I do not ever buy modified Busses and I do not modify them myself. Even if the person should know what they are doing they do not have near the experience working with INFI as Jerry does. If I want something modified I will spend the extra money to make sure it is done right. Also regarding the use of Dremel tools on knives, I would avoid this at all costs. Dremels produce a tremendously high temperature at a very localized point, even if the knife is kept cool, at the point the Dremel is being used it could reach a high temperature. A temperature that could easily ruin the temper of the knife. I have experience with this on another manufacturers knife, and I will not ever do this to a Busse. I would really recommend that none of you do it either. After seeing the effects, I think it should be avoided.

:D:D

The Cliff Stamp thread really brought back memories. For the last ten years or so of my career at Alabama Power Company, one of my responsibilities was general management of our materials testing laboratory. Our job was to perform various electrical and stress testing on Power Delivery materials and equipment. In other words, we burned up and broke things. We did extensive testing for competitive vendor evaluations for materials procurement. A quite familiar response from manufacturers who were not competitive in these tests was to attack the tests and the testers. We got several subtle hints about litigation, but none of them ever followed through with it.

Boy, the fun you can have with a twenty foot long hydraulic tensile machine!

The thought has never occured to me before, but maybe my materials testing/QA background is one reason I gravitate to Busses.

:D:D

if you have 300-1,200$ extra to spend on the blade plus 5-30 months willing time to be without it  - and if the mods will be accepted at all....

but your right. if you can get busse to do the mods, its worth it. a dremels are evil as far as heat. they can get the section of steel their working on up to skin searing heat, and up to discoloration heat within 1/4 second if its being ground hard.
