Sylvia Plath did the same thing as you, Jeremy, and wrote a poem about it.

Excerpt from "Cut":

What a thrill ----
My thumb instead of an onion.
The top quite gone
Except for a sort of hinge

Of skin,
A flap like a hat,
Dead white.
Then that red plush.
Us knifenuts have probably had enough bleeders to write entire volumes of crappy angst-ridden poetry. Eck.

Tip of the left thumb, which is now quite geometric in appaerance. RAT 7 was the culprit (a bottle of wine was the accomplice)

Iv never cut a bit off but stuck my ka-bar through the edge of my hand just above my index finger, that was a gusher and i stitched it my self :D I also droped a knife on to my arm whils making a treehouse and poped that big vein on the inside of my elbo that bled alot too !!

I did this last year with a 99 cent razor blade. It cost me 13 stitches and my wife laughing her ass off.

if it is severed put the limb in a plastic bag, and this in a plastic bag filled with ice and cold water. If u put the severed limb or finger in direct contact with the ice, it will get damaged by the forming of ice cristals in the tissue. Second take a clean washed and ironed towel, this is second best from chirurgical dressing. Push down or in the the wound. Don't put a garrot around the limb because it is better to have some blood circulating thru the cut part to stop necrotisation and the forming of toxics inside the limb. If it is a squirter, u could try to clamp the bloodvesseld with a kocher. Just put pressure on the wound, to restrict the flow of blood.Don't put a fresh towel on the wound every time, better to rap the soaked towel with a new one. Go to the docter if u have a pulsating bloodstream, u can see tendons or bone, or if u have partly lost sensory feeling below the wound. Remember that with very large trauma on a limb (amputation), the body will send massive amounts of signals to the severed limb contracting the muscles. It could restrict or even stop massive bleeding. Most important is, don't panic, call 911, put the horn off the hook and beside your body and sit down on the floor, keep talking to the calltaker, give as much information about your whereabouts if possible. If u can safely do it, open the door, put on exterior lighting and give details about your house, the car on the driveway etc to aid identification of your whereabouts. And remember a human body can survive much more then we are told and see on the tv.

Me and my brother got given SAKs for Christmas when we were about 11 or 12. Never being the careful type, several days after my bro came downstairs covered in blood. He said he'd cut himself. It wasn't until he stopped holding the 'cut' and we saw the flesh of his thumb pad slide away from his thumb that we realised it was more than just a nick. An hour later my parents decide it's time for the A&E (accident and emergency) department as the blood flow was not decreasing at all. He has no feeling in his thumb to this day.
Thankfully all mine have only been minor knuckle and finger slices that stopped with compression.

As far as the correct procedure of first aid for cutting a large chunk of flesh off ....well thats easy!!

First thing you do is thrust whatever is in your hand as hard as you can at the closest wall, then swear your head off like crazy whilst kicking something at ground level and making sure it is very damaged. Then proceed to abuse the closest person to you blaming them for your pain whilst holding your hand tight and producing a horrified look on your face. (remember to tremble your hand for effect).

once you have completed this first procedure then by this stage throbbing should be setting in........once this has begun make good use of neck movements to to allow onlookers the severity of your dilemma, swear a couple more times for this helps with the pain.

Place your uninjured hand on a stable base for a split second whilst swaying slightly giving a convincing impression that you are about to pass out. This works well for full cooperation of sympathetic observers.

Then just let one of them take care of it.
