Ever decided you don't want a knife before it even arrives?

When the 38s came out, I opted for the blackwood Orchard Gem, which is a beautiful knife. As a newbie, it was the first SFO I had a crack at. But before ordering, I agonized about whether to go for the whittler. I was entranced by the pruning blade though. While waiting for it to arrive, I had severe bouts of "what-have-I-done-itis." And it took me a while to warm up to the farmer's jack, I admit.

SO much of that hits home. It's strange that I'm fine with having many knives that I collect just not that I carry. When I first started my knife collection I wanted it to be a collection of knives I would carry/rotate but alas I couldn't do it. I think that's why I only collect old knives so I have an excuse to not worry about carrying them..." those are for collecting" seems to put my mind at ease...

That actually makes sense, and it helps put the collecting impetus in perspective. Begs the question, "do I really want to have a collection, or is it just that there are a lot of knives I think I would like to carry?" Plus, old stuff is cool. Probably harder to come by, so maybe that aspect of it becomes more of an activity?
