Ever feel guilty about the knives you have?

Ok, weird question time: Ever feel guilty about the number of knives you have? I mean, I could probably get away with having like, 3 knives, maybe even different sizes, yet I have about 18 in my measly collection (compared to some of what I've seen on the Forum). But then that "addiction" takes over and I'm searching for that next new Blade. Funny, cause I can only really use one at a time if I really think about it! Anyone out there know what I'm talking about?

And don't even get me started about the amount of $$ I've sunk into these things...

Just curious.

I don't feel guilty about it, but there are times when I would like to reduce the number I have so that the ones I like most get carried more often.

No! I walked that path like a car going through a carwash and am dryed out and on the other side. I sold all the superflous knives and have about a dozen folders representative of some categories. EDC, hard use, etc...

I have a couple machetes and a few fixed blades - everything in the herd got sold off and nothing but users are left. I feel a lot better than when I had 2 big tupperware boxes full of folders and one of fixed blades.

Now I play with them and rotate them in EDC and no safe queens - like I mentioned. No guilt at all. :D

I am with So-Lo. Why should you feel guilty about having an avocation? It keeps you sane.

I'm not a big one for guilt. But I am for telling the truth (especially to myself), setting limits, and acting responsibly. If buying or collecting knives is getting in the way of behaving like an adult, then I need to modify my behavior. If not, no harm, no foul.

No, why would you? A collector's role is to store and protect artifacts, as works of art and individual/industry, so that they remain available to future generations. Private collections are where most museum exhibits ultimately come from.

Those who collect knives include many who enjoy the outdoors, tools, and martial arts, and, they use some of their knives for those purposes. But, not all knives are purchased to be used; we wouldn't be paying as much as we do to merely accomplish what can be done with a far less expensive tool. You should be proud of doing your part to patronize, catalog, and promote the makers of these wonderful and often beautiful little machines.

I know people with huge collections made up of things like coins and stamps. They’ve spent a ton of time, effort and money, however I’ll never see them mail a letter with a rare stamp or by gas with a valuable coin. I however take a lot of satisfaction out of using my knives.

They don’t have any reason to feel guilty, and neither do I.

not2sharp, well said. Case in point, on my son's 21st birthday, I passed on to him a shotgun that my great grandfather used to hunt. That's a lot of years & stories (5 generations) built into that gun. Good answer.
Be safe.

As long as the kids are fed and the mortgage is paid.....no guilt here.

I have had a few acquisitions here and there that didnt feel right after I splurged on them. But I dont acquire anything unless it mid-to high end and can be moved easily.

As much as I buy/sell/trade I typically dont have a ton of knives. I just rotate the stock around as interests change.

Thats the part the CFO shakes her head at.

Hey, what can I say...thats just the way it is.:D

I feel guilty about the knives that sit in the collection that don't get used or carried.

Perhaps I don't share as many reviews and photos as I could, but guilt over owning too many? No.

However I do sometimes feel a bit of anxiety about not owning enough knives. Take, for example, a guy who's 40-year-old. If he averaged even one knife per month, he should have a total of 480 knives, right? I'm hopelessly behind... :(

I only feel guilty about the knives I keep putting off (e.g. Umnumzaan & Large LE Sebbie) because I don't have them yet. . . !
