Ever feel guilty about the knives you have?

Thanks for the opinions fellas. Kinda makes me feel better. Nice to know I'm in such good company of others that share a love for / hobby.

Guess I start letting the Mrs. get to me sometimes. Hey, I never comment on the number of shoes! But then again, I've yet to see a pair as expensive as an xm-18!

Thanks again for the comments.

I don't feel any guilt. There are probably worse things to spend money on. As NDJeep said "As long as the kids are fed and the mortgage is paid....."

I only add to my collection when I have some "fun" money". The last knife I added was a Spyderco G10 Dragonfly about 6 months ago. I also got the kids a couple of knives (a couple of KBar Doziers and SAKs for users).

Yes, I've felt guilty about having knives that I never even use when there are folks that can't even find their next meal. I'm always on the search for the ultimate knife but lately I'm also trying to weed out the knives I don't use and get down to the users in various categories.
I can still remember a 6 year period where the only knife I had was a partially serrated Delica3. It did everything I needed a knife to do and then some. I never even wanted another knife. My how things have changed.

I love knives.....
I love attending knife shows......
I enjoy sharing my collection and thoughts with others on this fantastic forum......

(all necessary bills paid every month)

Why on earth would I feel guilty..........:p

Why would anyone feel guilty about owning knives?

We aren't talking about a stable of underaged hookers or a colombian cocaine processing plant here; owning a knife collection isn't morally degrading, at least to me. :D

Well, I suppose you only need one knife if you have the right one.

I still haven't found the right one.

Likely, I never will.

i wouldnt feel guilty about but my only thing and question to everybody with those massive collections why have say 500+ knives when you can only use a certain amount at any given time

I have three fixed blades, but I feed my addiction by browsing the pics on this forum. I would like two more to my collection, the Ash1 and NMFBM, but it will never happen unless I sell two of my three fixed blades. I have an EDC (SAR 3), camping knife (Chris Reeve Mountaineer 1, 4 inch blade) and a chopper, Busse BWM.

I'm not a big one for guilt. But I am for telling the truth (especially to myself), setting limits, and acting responsibly. If buying or collecting knives is getting in the way of behaving like an adult, then I need to modify my behavior. If not, no harm, no foul.

+1 Nicely said.

As long as the kids are fed and the mortgage is paid.....no guilt here..:D

Neither apply to me, but I agree in principle and spirit.

I feel guilty about the knives that sit in the collection that don't get used or carried.

Guilt might not be the word I'd use, but I hear ya on this one.

+1 This might be as close to guilt as I'm gonna get with regards to my knife collecting. But if you look at it that way, then everything you own that goes beyond basic survival should induce guilt... more food than just enough to maintain health, clothing sitting unworn in the closet, any number of televisions, more than one car, etc. When you look at it that way it becomes an unrealistic and unnecessary guilt trip. Enjoy what you've earned!:)

It really depends on how you look at it. Some people are so broke they can't eat let alone have a home. If I look at that person, sure I feel bad I have 50 things that all accomplish the same thing at the end of the day I could get by with 1 or 2.

I only purchase knives that are going to be users - as that is what they were inteded to be. Sure I have more than I need, but if they get used the guilt doesnt come anywhere near me.

I kinda feel the same way. For 6 or 7 years I had a Gerber EZ out that cost about $25 and did every single thing I needed. Sometimes I feel like I might be over doing it in terms of what I reallt "need".

I have felt guilty, but not about the ones I bought, but about the ones I didn't get.

I'll trade you some users for those safe queens!

That would be the purses, my friend. My girl has several purses in the $400 to $800 range (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Coach, etc.), so she can't really fault me for getting another Sebenza!

The only reason I buy so many, is so that you can't have them. :p

Seriously?!? How could your knife-shopping possibly affect someone else's eating habits?

If we stop buying knives (or whatever) we don't need, how many people would lose their jobs? :(

As long as my money is honestly earned and spent on quality products made by quality people, I have nothing to be 'guilty' or sorry about.

You're joking, right? If I took all the money I've spent on knives, and donated it to a charity that works with the starving poor, it would have been money much, much better spent.

Yes, I do feel guilty, and I dread to think that in some way shape or form, my soul will one day be held accountable.

I feel guilty that such an unworthy, unwashed bumpkin as myself could EDC a Sebenza.

I'm a member of the undeserving poor, and I mean to go on being undeserving. I like it, and that's a fact.

Just so you don't feel guilty about your next knife acquisition. If you donate a money to Charity after salaries, bonuses, expenses you're lucky if a few bucks out of $100 gets to the needy people you see on the TV. You're better off to donate something directly to a local cause or family in need, than these big organizations that run in excess of 80% overhead. :)

I feel guilty sometimes because I feel like I should be saving my money instead of spending it. I am in college though and dont have a job or house or car so I think it is reasonable guilt. If I had a house paid off and a job already, I would not feel guilty. In fact, I consider knives a type of investment. They may not have monetary returns like stocks and bonds, but I sure do enjoy carrying and using them. When I get tired of a knife, I sell it and usually make a good portion of my money back (~75%).

But there is another side in the guilt. I know that a knife will not make me happy in a deep way, and every time I buy a knife I know I am continuing the addiction (you all know what I am talking about ) rather than breaking it and learning to be happy with what I have.
