Ever Feel Guilty? ...I do

I do. Sometimes I wish I had just one good knife, and I didn't have this wandering lustful eye!

I thought about posting a thread like this, but was scared to confront my fears. i think I have way too many knives and choppers. Around 100 a think. I need to sell some of them. At the same time, I've just started a profitable knife-related business and I'm looking into working with a factory to have custom designs made. Hopefully that'll curb my enthusiasm for sharp and pointies a little. :D I just have too much stuff in general. My brother gets buy with so much less stuff than I do.

Suddenly I feel at home here...

I also research and buy knives and multitools for my husband and 2 teen sons. Its as much fun buying for them as it is for me.

Do you have a sister?:D

That's awesome you buy knives for your family. My wife just says "you don't need another knife" in a irritated tone every time I bring up buying a new one.

Our economy depends on constant purchasing of things we do not need.
You're doing your patriotic duty! Don't feel guilty.:)

Amen to that. You are supporting the American economy by purchasing things. Also, you are supporting the USPS by using them to get your stuff. Think of all the poor and downtrodden postal workers that would lose their livelihood if thehy only had letters to deliver. Sad.

Yes I sometmes feel the same way; that is when I give away a knife to a friend or relative. I also don't buy very expensive knves & keep a rotation of 6-8.

Working like a dog your entire life, then dying, seems like a complete waste. We were put on this Earth to live and love... love and protect your family, be kind to your fellow man, contribute to the betterment of society. And, have a hobby that you enjoy that doesn't conflict with why we are here. So many people bleed away their time and money on behaviors that harm themselves and those around them. I think folks on this forum understand these basic guidelines.

i have the same disease, sometimes i buy a knife just to test the steel. have about 9 edcs & always monkeying with another.

Yes, I am at the point where I have waaaaaay more knives than I intended to get when I decided to collect. Yet, there are about 30 models out there that I still desire and may purchase some or most of them.

It makes me feel selfish and guilty buying luxuries when there are hungry people in the world.

Though I am not ready to do it yet, I plan to get rid of most of my stuff, including most knives at some time. What's the point of hanging on to them when they just sit in the closet or in drawers?

And being on this board doesn't help, seeing all the cool knives others have makes me want them more!

I'm 40 years old, my living grandfather is 90. He cane from meager beginnings, the depression and WWII. He bought a knife stuck it in his pocket and there it served him for decades.

Me...I buy one knife carry it for a few months and move on to the next. Always wanting more and more...the last knife is never enough. That embarrasses me sometimes when I think about it. I buy the fixation of my desires, drooling all the while...and when tracking it on UPS.com to my door I am already lusting over the next knife. I almost forget about the one on it's way.

Do I need to change my thinking?

Yes you need to change. Send me all of your knives except one and you will feel much better.:D

In my opinion, an interesting question.
I do think that our society and media urges us to consume more and more - for many people shopping is a goal in itself, and yes, meanwhile I also have a pile of knives. And cds. And books. And more books. And wine. And did I mention books?
More and more I am wondering myself if living with essentials (of really good quality), thus uncluttering your life isn't a way to a more balanced, less materialistic lifestyle. I could see myself reducing my collection (that has only a handful of disappointments; most have character and are nice) to a varied selection of around 15 knives which could last me in essence for ever.

To the OP , your not the only one who feels 'guilty' at times.

Dagon , I have toyed with the idea of minimalism but , that's about as far as it goes , that said I have sold a lot of my stuff over the last couple years.

I havent bought a new knife in a while , maybe two and half months. There are a few I do want to get but I do not need them , nor really have the cash for them.

The economy is crappy , money is tight. I love knives as much as anyone on here or else... I wouldnt bother to spend time on a knife forum.

When cash is tight , luxuries like another knife are way back on the list , if even on the list at all.

I buy what I need and not much more. I buy a knife and use it for it's intended purpose and then pass it on. I have very little gear or knives for that matter that just sit around, it's bought and used well.

I went through a buying spree but after seeing all those knives laying around it made me kind of sick that they weren't being used. So I am now down to 2-3 knives from too many to count.

Try to maintain a sense of balance. Sometimes we need to set limits. If we can't then there may be a problem. Stephen

Buy and collect carefully and they can be a good investment.(something you can tell yourself anyway)

I already feel that way, and after maybe 3 knives. My first was a Delica 4, combo-edged, and I carried it for 6 months, after which I got a Mili.

That knife was my constant companion, doing everything I needed it to do-the first knife I really formed a "bond" with.

Now I've gotten a Gayle Bradley, and it's booted the Mili smartly out of my pocket. I still fondle the Mili at home, but I feel guilty every time I do so.

Now I'm eyeing a FRN Stretch and an orange Urban...

There is a difference between collecting as a hobby, and a compulsive disorder. There are lines that should not be crossed. If you are using fun entertainment money, enjoy it. Some people like to gamble, others run up high bar tabs, or both. I gave up alot of things that were bad for me. I now enjoy guilt free knife buying. I think I hover around 44 knives, which is my age. I am a little tight for money right now, so I look only, and not too hard at that. LOL. If you understand how blessed and well off you are for having fun money to spend, it will never be a thing of greed, envy, or covetousness. I would sell off my knives in a heartbeat if we really needed the money. I figure my kids will enjoy my collection. I purposely use all of them.

I feel the exact same way. I've carried and sold dozens of knives waiting on the next "Super Blade" I feel guilty sometimes because of the nice stuff I have...knives or not.
