ever feel the need to stop buying knives

Thanks Cpl - good ideas - i was thinking of something like that -- last week i sold a guitar that i had not payed in a long time -i own several - it listed for 1,300 but i got it for 900 - but would be hard to get 3 or 4 hundred even though it was in mint shape - a pawn shop would only offer 100 or 150 on a loan and then sell it for 400

they lose at least half their value or moire when you walk out of the store unless they are one of a kind - I put an add out on craig list for 700 and got a call from a nice lady hat wanted it for her daughter for Christmas and she offered me 600 -

- i almost felt bad about selling it but then i thought about it and i have guitars i play regular and and this sat in a case in the closet i would; rather that nice 13 year old girl enjoy it than have it sitting in my closet

we met at a place and i l;et her daughter play it foir an hour or so to make sure it fit her hands and the she really liked it - she was a really nice kid and really enjoyed it so the money didn't really matter in the end - i felt really good about her having it

Buy them when you can. Sell them when you have to.

All my shiny metal things are getting traded for medicine when I'm old.

Life is transient; so is happiness. If a new knife makes you happy for a while, it's good.

Absolutely. Over the course of a year or so I bought a couple of thousand dollars worth of knives. Now I'm not really so much into it and have stopped "cold turkey". HI khuks, swords and knives are the only ones that even tempt me any more. I don't regret it per se, but wouldn't mind thinning out my accumulation.

Why not just sell the ones you don't use? Surely you aren't using all of those huge knives and axes.

well we split a couple cords of oak here every year so the axes are needed - then the bearded axes and the goose wing i am saving for carpentry work the way they were designed for truing up; planning and fitting logs and such - one day i want to build a log cabin the way they did old days - even if a small shed. its just something i always wanted to do - after 20 plus years of construction work that's the only thing i haven't done at least once

your right about the big knives though - in reality if the zombie apocalypse hit i could only really carry two maybe be three - the 20 inch CAK would be one like Cpl says the one knife for ultimate final back up

when i came back from Desert Shield and Storm i ended up getting an assault and battery charge and serving some time and started all over again from nothing.

like i said previously them after years of working 70 and 80- hour weeks and getting a house and wife then later sold everything and lived on the road for years so i guess now that i am in a home again and have a place to put stuff i got carried away

thanks for all the ideas and comments guys

I generally swing wildly back and forth between buying many inexpensive knives or fewer Expensive knives or buying guns. I will generally sell/trade guns and knives to fund more different guns and knives. For the first time in years I'm not using the money I have acquired through selling to buy more guns and knives. I do however have a lot of knives inbound right now though. But Unless I really dislike these I think I'm going to be set for a while. That is until the new cold steel TriAd lock knives come out this summer....

:D

I have a friend who's son is on the spectrum, and while he is very bright, there are definitely some major challenges I see him facing. With good therapy and the right medications he has been a really great kid. Stories he tells me about the early years are really tough to imagine. Best of luck to you and your son.

I hope things get better for ya, Bargs. My Fiance is in Autism education, so I know you face challenges daily.
You oughta poke your nose in more often. SOme awful nice, caring folks here in the Cantina.

I think I need to stop buying. I don't have a need for any of them.
I do have a want though. I want lots of them but then I think the money
Would be better spent buying silver coins instead.
I do want a bali song butterfly knife though...never had one
Or used one...always had the cheap $ 10 flipper knives from china.

i hope all is well for you and your family

there's no question it can be an addiction. at least it won't harm your health, well unless an accident happens.

Every time I buy a new knife I say to myself "OK, no more knives until you really need another" then 3 days later I buy a new knife. This happens all the time, of course the time between purchases changes, but I never see a decrease in my buying habits. I did once however stop buying knives for an entire year, but that's mainly because guns were stealing all my money.

I did! But the feeling passed fairly quickly and no permanent ireparable damage was caused......

i love it - great answerer - i think i mis-stated the question - i love knives; big ones; lil ones; short ones; long ones; - just need to be more selective and save some money - i have enough to get buy (for now) might even sell a couple - i think i will look into a nice firearm and a mid to high end crossbow

Gotta say it's a good time to be buying knives. If you have to waste money on knives, this is the time and place to do it. Lotta nice knives out there. ;)

That said, I've bought enough knives in the last two years that I'm slowing down now. I used to spend all my money on computers but have been getting by with some old athlon single core machines for a long time now. Need to upgrade though and those unlocked sandy bridge processors look pretty nice for the price.

My knife buying has really slowed down. I've been carrying pocket knives in rotation for longer periods of time. Getting a real feel for 'em before I switch out. I carried a pen knife for a year, inspired by the Peanut Challenge on the Traditional forum. It never let me down but it is a bit small. Switched to a 4" stockman for a good 6 months. It felt good in the hand but was a bit big for the office. Now a 3 & 3/8" stockman rides in my pocket. On or off the clock. I won't be buying another pocket knife any time soon. It'll have to be a pretty nice knife to bump the H&R.

My khuk buying has also slowed to a crawl. The big WWII is always the chopper I reach for unless I'm opening coconuts, then it's the 12" siru. Heather claimed the 15" AK. I replaced it with a 13"/ 21oz Ultimate Fighter. But it's not really a good replacement for the AK. I haven't yet figured out what do do with the UF. So, I still reach for either the WWII or the siru. Hmm...

This push for simplicity has found its way into other aspects of my life. Jackets, shoes, belts, watches. I've even tried to pass along paperbacks I'm unlikely to read a second time. I don't feel a need to stop buying knives but I'm trying to give a lot of thought to what would make me happy for more than a day/ week/ month.

Living in a temperate country with strict knife import laws i have to be extra thoughtful about selecting the knives.
It took me a while to get used to the system of shipping and custom declaration thanks to Cotherion.

I'm still waiting for a few models from Auntie and that should be it. It's always back to the basics and i got to know which blade profile that i liked the best (wide belly like Samsher, YCS ) and i moved towards that direction.

When i looked back towards what i have i try to think what would i do with it. The intent is to reduce as much safe queen as possible. You could only tell if the knife's great if you used it. That's me. No doubt i will have my 2 Buras stashed but i will use one of it. It will be hard to justify the favorite khuk because of different function.Learning about the history of khuks and Gurkha made me respect this blade very much.
It was H.I who opened the horizon for me.

For now i'm putting a pause to the spending as other priorities come in. STOP seems difficult.

Over the past few years I went through two phases of very irresponsible and sort of thoughtless buying - Busse and CRK are to blame. It's odd because after the few time, I really thought I had an addiction. It was an odd, scary and depressing feeling, especially since I had been laid off and unemployed when this bug bit.

Eventually I went through a phase where I looked at what I used and carried. I sold all my Chris Reeves as my Delica 4 never left my pocket. I sold 75% of my Busses because my ESEEs are a quarter of the price and do the same thing very well.

This splurge and sell-off cycle has happened twice now with knives.

When I get a "buy impulse" now, I go over and handle my keepers - this has worked like a charm and kept the "hunger" at bay. Haha if any of you guys are Dexter fans, i sometimes feel like my knife buying urges are a "dark passenger." Do I think I will go through another irresponsible buying binge? Possibly, but with a wedding in 10 days and then hopefully trying to have children over the next few years, my priorities (and cash) will be elsewhere and keep me out of trouble.

I've also come to realize that I was splurging when I was at a low point in my life or just bored... It is absolutely a window into my mental state.
