I just did. I usually only used O1 while I was getting started, then I ventured on to 1095 and 1084,. now I have a knife on my bench and I cant remember what it is! I'm going to pick up a little etcher to scratch the numbers in the handle or something from now on. duh

I can easy see that happening - most of my blade steel is different thickness depending alloy, so that allows me to ID the steel based on thickness.

Many years ago, the heat treater asked me to mark them. I am still doing so since I still send them out. BUT before marking to send out, I've had a few brain farts.

I scratch in the steel on all tangs for me as well as the heat treater.

Something else I do is trace the blade on a piece of paper with specs and put on a clip board so I can match it if the grinding removes the mark on the steel.

This helps a lot when getting blade back from heat treating as well. You just match the blade to the outline.

I used to mark them all with a sharpie marker. But frequent handling eventually wears the markings off so I started using stamps to mark the tangs. I have forgotten a few before I moved to stamps though.

I have a set of 1/8th stamps and a 1/8th pencil grinder. I'll usually use either of the two for marking my blades on the tang.

I not only mark them with white out pins I also use all stainless and one to two times with the blades ready for Ht, If I had ground off the marking or just wasn't sure? Paul and Paul at Paul Bos HTing at buck knives have been able to tell me that it was 440C or CPM-154 etc..

I do the same now because of this brain fart problem i have as well. now each one gets marked with a marker or an cheap engraver as soon as i cut it off the bar and then etched before shipping.

Probably everyone that uses multiple steel has done it , I heat treat myself and trying to harden a cpm 154 with 1084 heat treat just doesnt work very well lol I use the 1/8
" stamps from harbor frieght and mark everything.
