Ever given away a knife to a newbie who has shown interest in collecting?

A friend of mine brought her little brother (17) up to where we go to school a few weekends ago. While a bunch of our friends were all hanging out that night, my friend suggested that I should show her brother my collection of knives. He showed quite a bit of interest in them all and asked me lots of questions. He also said he'd never owned a pocket knife. Because of his interest I thought I'd let him have my Byrd Meadowlark since I seldom carry it and figured it'd be a decent first knife for him.

Anyway, any stories like this?

Yes, I have given away many knives to people. I think everyone should HAVE a good knife. I like to encourage budding knife collectors, and try to help them.

I am actually the recipient of a free knife from a more experienced knifenut. J.Mattson gave me a benchmade Pika II a while back and has started a very small collection in my house. I am very thankful for his kindness and which to say thank you to him again.

Even if they aren't going to start collecting, it's nice to get someone a good knife so they are able to start seeing the value of carrying a blade.

So far I've gotten one buddy of mine into collecting a few blades, and we even got his girlfriend a little sky blue SAK on which we put a red and blue lanyard (Our school colors, see if you can guess it based on my location "phrase").

Yep. Gave my father an orange Od-1, now he's getting into collecting. And giving my grandfather a CPM154 Blur for Christmas this year since he showed an interest in my S60V Blur.
I figured that I might as well spread the passion for knives, so far they are very receptive and interested in learning more, so I feel that I can justify losing some of my knives to somebody who will use them.

What's our country coming to when a 17 year old has never owned a pocket knife? It wasn't that many years ago when every boy had some kind of knife in his pocket. You provided that young man a real service in gifting him that Byrd. I hope you also talked to him about responsible use and ownership.

Gifted quite a few slipjoints out to many folks. Its a good feeling to give. Especially to those that will appreciate the gesture. However, admittedly I've always encouraged them to USE the knife rather than start a collection with it

Given several knives away in the last couple years. Mostly to folks who I know who are living rough and need one for everyday living purposes.

I've given quite a few friends knives and my best friend and I exchange knives on almost every gift-giving holiday. There's something important in giving someone a knife, almost ritualistic (dunno if that's the right word for it). I never sell or trade a knife I've received as a gift and the most precious knife in my collection is actually a cheap chinese folder with the words "For my brother" engraved on the blade.

I gave my nephew a CB Leek last year for his birthday. He has now added a CKT Shallot, Blue Blur, Spyderco Captain, and an Orange G10 Tyrade.
He is wanting mainly sprint run models now. Every week he calls me to see if anything new is coming out.
I think I have created a monster.:D

Gave my almost everyone in my family a knife and they have all been used somewhat. I gave my bro a custom fixed blade that he always keeps in his day bag. Gave both my mom and dad a small Vic alox for their key chains which they both love. Also gave my mom a caly 3 for camping which she loved. My dad got really jealous and wanted me to get him one for xmas heh. I am the knife giver for my friends and family:)

I've given Buck 110's to all the male members of my and LOML's immediate family, not for collecting but for using. They all know better than to ask to borrow mine (I always have it, but asking for it will gain them some verbal abuse). I always say to them, "If you don't carry your knife you waste half your life running back and forth to the kitchen drawer."

When my father died, LOML took up a Frost hawkbill that he had, and I gave it to her (after sharpening it. My dad liked knives, but he didn't sharpen very well).

i have given alot of knives away over the years to my sons mygrand son who shows every indication of becoming a knife nut just like his grandad . gave knives to my inlaws who have no clue about quality knives. irecently gave my sons girl friend asak because she lost hers at the airport.

I’m a big fan of giving knives away to all kinds of people. Newbies especially. My favorite is to give a knife to a women who I’m involved with, want to be involved with or just female friends. They keep them forever or carry them everywhere. Years can go by and they will pull the knife out of their purse and say remember????

In the past year when I give one to a lady I tell her it comes with lifesharp. Free sharpening for the life of the blade. THEY LOVE IT.

Try it.

GREAT THREAD!!

Never, but planning to give away a few as Christmas gifts this year. Mostly SAKs but I may throw in a Cricket.

If someone shows an interest in carrying and using a knife, I'm more than willing to gift a knife. Can't say I'd gift a knife for someone to simply collect though.

I give away knives with parental approval to kids to spark an intrest in Woodcraft , Local national guard who are headed in harms way and the leo's in my small town.

In the movie "the edge" they said that when someone gives a knife the receiver must give a coin in exchange so the friendship isn't severed. Have any of you heard of this superstition? If so I have some money coming to me for the walmart CRKT M16's I gave away.

Bought a Chris Reeve knife and gave it to a friend who coveted but could not afford it. Also have given my daughter several knives. She lives in Alaska and spends quite a bit of time hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing and hunting. She's getting a .44 mag for Christmas.
