Ever given away a knife to a newbie who has shown interest in collecting?

I gave my Kershaw Barrage to my little sister's B/F. I got it for writing a review on it from the Kershaw representative. So I passed it on to somebody that needed it and would make good use of it.

To gift knives to newbies is a common occurrence among Case Collectors, kinda cool to see those eyes light up.

and NEVER give someone a cheap POS knife. all my giveaways are knives i would ( have ) used. come to think of it, i dont own any cheap POS knives.:D

I've given away a few knives. If you give a knife be sure to collect a coin from the recipient. They say giving a knife can sever a friendship, if you collect a coin you are selling the knife.

I have a buddy that needs a knife from me. he's a collector but he's into weird fantasy knives. Right now he carries a fixed blade with batterangs magnetically attached. I plan on setting him straight with a good benchmade.

I don't know many people who are into collecting, but I've definitely given knives to people who needed them, or who were interested in using them.

I've given knives as gifts to people on special occasions. The only time I gave a knife away just "because" was to a friend in Alabama. I was driving through on my way back from a vacation so I called him up to meet for lunch. While we were at lunch he told me he lost his knife and was super pissed about it.

At the time he was a mechanic and I knew he was having issues with paying some of his bills. I gave him my BM Grip because I had a new D2 Grip waiting on my door step for when I got home. He's doing great now, but I cant pry that damn knife from him...Maybe I'll steal it back one day! I have to admit he's put it through more more hard use than it would have got if it stayed with me.

I have given a way a few knives to folks, I hate to see people strugle with a POS knife when they just don't know any better.

One guy I used to work with in the forestry always had crappy "no name" knives that would just fall to bits on him in a few weeks. He had no real interest in knives
and just got what ever one he liked the look of for work. I got fed up with this and just gave him an Emerson M1 and asked him not to buy any more of "those" knives.

A few months later the guy pulls out a CQC-7 he bought under his own initiative and asks if Spyderco are any good because he liked the cool name. :D:thumbup:

I gave my dad a CF kiwi but i dont think that he uses it so i talked to him and ended up getting him a Case knife which he really likes. i also purchased for him a nice set of fillet knives which he loves. also gave both parents spydie bugs and my little brother a ladybug. As he is joining the Marine Corp, i will also very soon be purchasing for him a spyderco military or para military which i will engrave with the date of his commissioning and graduation from college. Probably in the Digital Camo but we shall see. I also am going to be purchasing either some more ladybugs or just bugs for a few of my friends...We will see as i am still on a college students budget.

cool thread btw.

i have given alot of knives away over the years to my sons mygrand son who shows every indication of becoming a knife nut just like his grandad . gave knives to my inlaws who have no clue about quality knives. irecently gave my sons girl friend asak because she lost hers at the airport.

It is interesting that in my opnion in many cases passions (or obsessions lol) seem to skip a generation. I don't know if it's in the genes or if Grandpa has more influence than dear old dad. My Grand Father would grab his knife and gun and Dad said he would disapear into the mountains for weeks at a time. What a world that must have been. I wish I would have gotton to know him but they lived a state away and I only ever seen him maybe 3 or 4 times in my young life.

I can't wait to have grand kids! Maybe they will enjoy my passions---my kids don't!

I gave Byrd Crossbill to a co-worker a couple months ago. He likes knives, guns, and flashlights. He had recently bought a house and didn't have much disposable income. He saw me use it at work and asked about it. I gave it to him the next day. He was very appreciative I gave it to him. You should have seen the smile on his face. He still Carry's the knife today and thanks me every so often also.

I've lost track of how many knives Ive given to friends and family over the years. To the point that, if querried on the subject, to the person they would say a default gift from me is a knife of some sort lol. And like another person said earlier, NEVER a piece of junk, they usually have those already. BM Pika II's, Kershaw Groove's, Scallions and Chives, Forschner kitchen knives and if we're talking about my brother, some higher end stuff too. He'll get a Shun this year. Just love the feeling of giving someone something they can and will readily use (and in the case of my friends, eventually, lose, mostly to the TSA :barf: )
